Doom3 hardOCP Hardware Guide

Its released, it outlines the differences between low, meduim, and high quality settings. Tests a variety of video cards etc.

What is surprising is that the low quality setting still looks very incredible... anyway read away.

Well, in this pic about the only place I see difference is in the pipe on the ceiling.

Other than that, it is pretty hard to distinguish a difference.

Those are also really low resolution screenshots.

Also, [H] isn't exactly the greatest source.

I want to see how it'll run on my system...

Shouldn't be TOO bad, or so I hope. Far Cry ran quite well, so I hold out hope for Doom 3.

Pre-ordered so it should be here about 2 days after EB gets it, as I got free 2-day shipping, but couldn't do in-store pickup due to me using the $20 rebate from UT2k4, which limits it to online purchases only. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif]

I am prepared to run at 800*600 if I have to, but I think I may be able to pull of 1024*758 at low-med settings.

I don't really care about the level of detail, as long as I get a decent framerate.

I'd rather sacrifice detail for resolution. I'll probably run it on lowest at the best resolution I can. (Hopefully 1280x1024).

My comp won't be able to run it [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif]

Processor is only a P3 and I only have 256MB RAM. Apparently my dad thinks that 256 is a lot -_-; Also, my power supply only let's my video card work at half performance.

No job [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif] Dad went on a tirade about being "sorry" he bought me a computer. (It was a used one, for about $300 canadian. We gave it the new video card and the extra 128mb RAM.) I'd *Love* to build my own, but he thinks he knows more about parts and good deals than I do O-o. I really need a new motherboard if I want to play the newer games. ATM it won't support any better processors, and the one I have now is overclocked as far as the poor thing can go. We also just recently bought a house, and most of it belongs to the bank, so we need to pay off that too. God how I wish I had a job -_-; I get an allowance sure, but it isn't enough to get a new motherboard for a few monthes, and by then there'll probably be better games. Maybe even DNF.

They said that the aliasing isn't really noticeable (save for the first level) unless you're looking for them. They suggested upping your resolution as high as you could before trying AA.

Looks like my machine is gonna run this (1.9ghz, 512mb ram, Geforce 4 mx440), so I'm psyched that I didn't buy it for no reason. I couldn't afford the upgrades if I needed em for another 2 months.

[H] is the BEST source. They've only had one problem with cheating on a bench, and that was in the 8500 vs GF3 wars iirc.

They worked with Carmack himself on this crap.

Also, finity, that's 8xAF, not 8xAA.

Just some of the idiots that wrote about some modding stuff, specifically about cooling. So I guess I don't read much for their 3D.

But if Kyle was the guy that said aluminum dissipates heat faster than copper, yet copper absorbs more heat, well, that was just a stupid thing to say. Infact, I think that was him, I seem to remember him popping up on Ars and "defending" his claim (which was simply reiterating it even though it had been proven wrong). However he wasn't an arrogant dick and he admitted he was mistaken, so it's cool. But I'm not sure that was Kyle...so..yeah.
