Dandruff

It may not be dandruff, possibly just dry skin on the scalp. I don't know. Ive had it for so long and it just wont leave. I even get it under my beard. I take good care of my hair. But it just seems impossible to have nice supple skin. Who else is plagued by this?

If it's under your beard, you've just got really dry skin. I used to have crazy dandruff, and then all of the sudden it went away.

I used to have a problem with it, but when i stopped using head&shoulders and started using hippy shampoo it went away. Tea tree oil is awesome stuff.

As far as I know people with scalp dandruff usually get it under their beards after the beard is a certain length. That's my case, anyway.

Drink water.

And eggnog.

Then do jumping jacks.

Then use the vomit for a face mask.

Or see a dermatologist.

I stopped getting dandruff when I decreased my rate of showering from once a day to once or twice a week. For serious.

If you can't go that long without showering, then at least stop using shampoo every day. If you have dandruff, it's probably because the shampoo is removing the natural oils from your hair and scalp, and your scalp is drying out and flaking.

Yeah, I also take 1-2 showers a week. I feel so nice this way.

Seriously, it feels gross to shower daily. every 3-4 days is best.

Are you people serious? That's disgusting. How do you not smell.

man you guys are hilarious. the very concept that other people have different routines is so shocking that you have to insult them!

showering daily is a very recent habit in western society, and as pointed out earlier, is really bad for your skin. if you wash your skin and hair daily with soap (or cleanser/shampoo/etc), you then have to use moisturisers and conditioners and all kinds of crap to replace the natural oils you have taken away. if you have a dry skin/dandruff problem, but have to shower daily, do as DS said and just rinse instead of washing. I used to wash my hair every day because I was under the impression it got greasy that quickly - of course, it was washing it everyday that made it that greasy. I'm now down to hair washing once or twice a week and it's so much better. I do tend to shower daily most of the time, just because I can't wake up properly before work without it, but it really messes with my skin.

also, the fact that people are now being conditioned to find our natural smells repulsive is really frightening to me. perfumes, aftershaves, all that stuff is quite vile as far as I'm concerned. we've evolved our natural pheromones for a reason.

ok, bit of a rant there!

We lack the ability to really sense pheromones. We have a vestigal set of glands near the ridge of nose, if I recall. They aren't functional.

The "natural" human smell as you would put it is piss, ****, and horrific body odor. Thats how many male mammals mark their territory, and attract mates. That isn't how people work anymore.

I don't like over-done perfume. I also don't like smelly people.

I need to shower every day or I start to smell bad. It also has to be in the morning because I get smelly and greasy overnight.

Unlike Greenboy, my dandruff problem went away after using Head&Shoulders, but I don't know if the Head&Shoulders did that or if it stopped naturally somehow. I don't use Head&Shoulders anymore, and I haven't had noticeable dandruff in years.

I shower daily, it doesn't mess up my skin.

Your dandruff might be psoriasis.

My dandruff totally depends on my shampoo. If I use cheap Suave shampoo I'm fine. If I use cheap white rain shampoo, crazy dandruff.

I find it best to shower every other day, because otherwise it really is not that great for your skin. I think that's a pretty good compromise - I don't strip my hair and face quite as much, but it's not a long enough period of time to start to smell.

Of course I'm in college, so my showering habits aren't quite as regular as all that, but that
s the general idea (every day on a really cold weekend, less for hygienic purposes and more because they haven't turned on the heat in my dorm yet so a hot shower feels really nice :P)

I'm actually interested in how someone could NOT shower daily.

I personally, take two showers a day. One shortly after I wake, the other when I get home from work. I can get pretty dirty and sweaty at work. My scalp is not dry in the slightest bit, nor is my skin. I don't use conditioners or lotions. I get in the shower, use regular soap (and good smelling shower gel when I have to go somewhere nice or have a date), and just regular, $2 Dollar General shampoo.

Maybe consider seeing a doctor about it then? Use that Denorex shampoo.

Also, (and I'm not throwing out insults here) maybe you guys need to lead a healthier lifestyle? If you're not showering daily, then I seriously doubt you're going for a run or working out any (or hell even doing anything that makes ya breathe heavy). But if you are working out and going for a nice run/walk, and not showering daily, that's just bad personal hygiene. That would be worse than actually "drying out your skin".

Who told you this?

I have gone weeks and weeks without showering of any sort and done more strenuous activity than most people will ever do and it didn't **** with me.

Shaving every day though, that jacks me up. God damn military.

FYI some people, like myself, do not perspire a lot when we do aerobic exercise. I shower every day when I am going to be in a work/school situation. Other days, when I PT, I just step in the shower for no **** ten seconds to rinse sweat off. That is all you need after a workout, honestly.

All in all it helps to be a skinny, greasy jew.

If you went weeks and weeks without showering of any sort, while doing a lot of physical activity, sorry man, you smelled. You might not of smelt yourself, but I guarantee you smelled. This means your *** was not thoroughly washed, your armpits had sweat build up that I guarantee smelled. Deodorant on top of deodorant smells bad, it's in the instructions not to use it without washing off the previous application. Hair was both dirty and oily (which smells), feet had sweat build up which probably caused a borderline breakout of athlete's foot, on and on it goes.

I'm not saying that everyone has to shower once a day (but I certainly wouldn't want to be dating or romantically involved with someone who didn't), but going 3-4 days is pushing it I believe. I don't know of anyone in real life that does that, and matter of fact if I told them that I went 3-4 days they would look at me disgusted.

Putting any physical activity aside, even if you woke up one morning and took a shower, then set around for the next 3-4 days doing absolutely nothing but setting on the couch, playing video games, watching movies or TV, in 3-4 days you would smell. You would smell bad. Of course you could come on here and say you wouldn't, but you'd be lying.

Here's a list of things that happened since I switched to having daily showers:
- My hair started falling out
- I started sweating a lot more
- My skin got greasier
- My hair got greasier
- Got smellier

I'm thinking of switching back to a less regular showering routine, though obviously with washing when appropriate.

Is red and flaky, or just flaky?

You may want to try some tar based shampoo (t-gel comes to mind) for a week, see what happens.

Also, the clash of opinions here are funny. I have to shower daily, if I don't, I smell. Also, the thought keeping the grime of the outside on myself for longer than a day disgusts me. Then again, I remove my shoes at home... hmm, maybe I'll make that a poll.
2007-10-26, 1:57 PM #24
Hair started falling out? Unlikely. Just the hair you naturally lose being easier to spot, since it's not "greased" to your other hair.

Sweating a lot more. This is probably just you not noticing it as well, since you're skin is greasier and oilyer (sp?!).

Skin, hair, and smellier are all probably just you noticing it more. If you're not showering daily, you're not removing all that junk. When you stop showering, it's there, you just don't notice it as much.

When I use to smoke, I wouldn't smell like smoke. Or so I thought. Same principle here.

You know, i've gone weeks without showering. With a required daily salt water rinse. Eventually the salt builds enough to prevent smells. And it makes my hair look awesome. I've also done a 100 mile rowing race, over 1 week long. With no showers. You're just not man enough or something. And yeah, showering twice daily is disgusting.

Great. Going weeks without showering. If that's what you prefer, go for it. But doesn't change the fact you'd smell and be covered in filth.

Next time you're out in a social setting where you're trying to strike interest in a woman, let em know you like to shower at most twice a week. You'll see how much of a "man" you are then.

My exgirlfriend, who I was with for a year did those same trips. And we both didn't wear deodorant. You fail at accepting differences.

No I accept your difference.

Doesn't change the fact that I would consider the two of you to have disgusting hygiene.

However, if you're on some sort of trip where it's not practical to shower, such as a camping/hiking trip or your rowing race, that's acceptable. I've been on camping trips where I haven't showered for four to five days. Still considered it to be disgusting, first opportunity to shower and I was right there to do it.

But the fact you say it's best to shower once every three to four days, well, like I said, I consider that disgusting. If that's an insult to you, sorry.

Body odors just don't smell bad to me. Axe smells like ***. Most colognes/perfumes give me a slight headache. I walked past a store full of shampoo and soap and stuff, and it made me want to gag.

They make non scented shampoo, soap, and deodorant. But that's beside the point, I don't care if you like to use that stuff or not. My point is, going days without showering or cleaning yourself is just bad hygiene. Plain and simple. If you're comfortable with that, great, I have no problem with it.
2007-10-26, 8:42 PM #31
I just took a shower. And its not bad hygiene, thats my point. It is in no way unhealthy to not shower every day.

Axe does smell like ***.

I usually take like two showers a day, but don't really use soap/shampoo.

One in the morning to wake me up;one at night to rinse my body. Both are warm showers.

I really don't see what's wrong with just rinsing. Plus if they are only 5 -10 minutes long, I don't think that should cause damage.

Going three to four days is bad hygiene. Ask someone.

Do you wear the same underwear four days in a row? The same socks? If you're not getting dirty, there's really no need to wash those either, is there?

I'm not explaining it to you. You're 17, so if you're still in high school, ask your health teacher why it's not very good hygene. The fact that your 17 and only bathing once or twice a week is terrible hygene, in fact. Teenage years are when you should bathe the most.
