Shoes on or off at home?
2007-10-26, 1:55 PM #1
Pretty straightforward question. I'm curious as to what people answer.

Personally, I take my shoes off at home. I'm not fond of taking whatever is on the ground into my living quarters, such as feces, urine, pesticide, and other such lovely things.

On a tangent, an argument has been made to wear shoes inside the house with younger children to prevent allergies from forming (or just have your house... dirtier in general). There is some evidence to support it, but I personally think it's rubbish as far as why there are greater numbers of asthmatics out there.

No shoes inside the home. I guess it's a custom around here.

Makes sense too. And that means a lot since I'm really lazy.

Finland is almost like Japan. No shoes at home.

Though there are always some who don't follow this tradition. But as far as I've had the displeasure to see, those individuals haven't been following any traditions of cleaning their place either. So, among normal people it's a shoeless custom.

Usually shoes off, unless I'm in and out of the house, or going to do something later for sure. Then I leave my shoes on because putting them on takes 30 precious seconds, and I hate tying my shoes.
I had a blog. It sucked.

No shoes, and I don't wear socks if i've come back from work. Travelling on the tube covers you in so much grease, sweat and grime that I have to remove as much clothing as possible as soon as I get home.

No shoes, sometimes socks if my toes are cold. The place I'm renting has hardwood floors which are great for my allergies. I'd probably die if I had to live in a house with carpet again.

Shoes on because I'm always in and out of my house.

If I got a new place I might consider keeping a shoeless residence, but the amount of dirty crap that always ends up sprawled on my floor (CLP, lithium grease, dirty field gear, shavings from speedskates, sweat, sexual debris etc.) makes it SO not worth it.

Shoes off, because I'm... normal.
2007-10-26, 2:47 PM #11
Actually depends. If I'm just lounging around, shoes off of course, but if I'm doing something productive or going in and out a lot I have my shoes on.

It's an oddity of mine.

Agreed. Shoes off is normal.

I know a decent amount of people who don't. The poll results are frankly surprising to me. For example, outta my classmates, I know of only one who doesn't allow shoes in their dorm.

Maybe a "sometimes" option would fit, but I would actually file "sometimes" under "yes". No matter what I remove my shoes, for no longer how long I'll be inside. I wonder if that option woulda changed the results...

Shoes always off at home. Its the clean thing to do. I have friends who don't take their shoes off for days and when they do, it smells like **** in a 30 yard radius.

Our house is mostly carpeted, and I'm barefooted if it's practical. If I've been somewhere that needed shoes then I'll leave em on sometimes. I prefer no shoes at all, but I don't go out of my way to get bare feet.

I think that asthma/dirty houses thing as being absolutely true. When people have these immaculate houses and then scrub themselves to death, they're not gonna expose themselves to anything they should normally build up a resistance to. They also say getting a dog will help with allergies too.

At home, shoes off, however when I'm at the place I live on campus, I always have shoes on. My roommate broke three glasses by dropping them in the first week after I moved in with him, and did a piss poor job of sweeping up the glass afterwards, so since I've just kept shoes on all the time.

I had a knife go through my foot once at home, since then I've worn shoes as much as possible.

I'm far more comfortable with my shoes off, especially since I tend to sit cross-legged or with my feet up on something (like the coffee table). Also, there's nothing quite like the feeling of getting home from work and taking your shoes off :D

What? I walk around barefoot all the time. My feet are fine, if a bit calloused.
Hell, I did a few hikes barefoot last year. Humans didn't evolve with shoes in mind, barefoot works perfectly fine. >_>

I'll be smacked if I wear shoes in my house. The thought of it is also gross.

Must be an eastern thing. I'd never even heard of a shoes-off requirement until a similar thread to this a while back. I usually wear shoes inside simply because I don't take them off automatically when I come in. If I'm wearing tennis shoes, I usually leave them on unless I lay down or just feel like it, but when I have boots on and I know I'll be in for a few minutes, I take them off.

I usually wear socks around the house, except maybe in summer when I'll go barefoot. Don't usually like to keep my shoes on in the house.

Usually I kick off my shoes for comfort, but that's usually after I've already walked through my house and dirtied up the floor. Sometimes I leave my shoes on if I'm either leaving soon, or just don't care. I even lay down on the floor from time to time too, guess that means I'm not a germ-o-phobe.

My "shoe status" isn't dictated by location. It's more governed by whether I already had them on or not. When I come home from work, I'm already wearing shoes, and I'll just leave them on until I get ready for bed. When I get up in the mornings, I'm not wearing shoes, so I don't put them on unless I go outside or I leave.

Shoes are bad for feet. Also, fungi and odor are caused by keeping feet cooped up in hot, damp, dark places... Like shoes.

Shoes off whenever possible. Inside, outside, as often as I can.

I haven't heard the "clean house causes allergies" thing before, but I wouldn't be surprised if it were true. It wouldn't be an issue, however, if people would just go outside.

And there is growing support for shoes causing a lot of damage to feet. They're a necessary evil in today's concrete society (feet were designed to walk on grass and natural surfaces, not concrete and other artificial ones), but a lot of shoes are designed by marketing strategies, not science. "Support sounds like a good thing, so... MORE SUPPORT." "Cushioning sounds like a good thing, so MORE CUSHIONING!" etc.

The human foot was designed to strike ball first, and then roll to the heel. Try walking like that for a few steps, then go back to normal heel-strike first step. It is so clunky and unnatural, it causes so much shock to your ankles/knees, it is a ridiculously unnatural movement. However, it is neigh impossible to walk right (ball to heel) with shoes on, and we walk, primarily, with shoes on from when we are very young on, and so that's how we develop our walking technique.

I find it ironic that they way most people walk is completely unnatural...

Yeah. Not like, you know, weekly, but every once in a while.

Coincidentally I almost never get sick. This is either due to my superior genetics as part of the master race or maybe just the fact that I lead a healthy lifestyle and that taking off your shoes is not a part of that lifestyle.

Keep in mind, those of you who say that bare feet are natural feet for humans. Laying on filthy ground is also natural for humans.

off, except my house shoes, which I only wear during cold seasons... I don't find shoes (except the before mentioned house shoes) to be that comfortable to wear for long periods of time.

Laying on filthy ground wouldn't be a problem if we grew up more exposed to nature. Bare feet being healthy doesn't mean bare feet are healthy for walking through a city gutter. City gutters aren't natural either, so you probably do need shoes. Unless you live in a mud pit, you're not gonna catch anything from simply walking through your yard with no shoes on.

That's most like me. I've walked all over my town barefoot before. I've walked on broken glass, through Mexico, and I've never had any sort of foot problem. My high-school math teacher would call me "Feet," because I would be barefoot in his class.

Wear shoes, majority hardwood floors. That'll probably change come winter/snow.

Seeing as it takes half a second to take off or put on my shoes, I take 'em off indoors. Just because I can.

I do wish I lived in a warmer climate. Barefoot is impractical 9 months of the year here. I used to wear sandals spring, summer, fall, and bits of winter. But I decided blue feet are bad, and so I stopped. >_>
