Homosexual Simpsons character
2004-07-29, 9:11 AM #1
One of the characters on Simpsons will be coming out of the closet and a homosexual union will be formed in the near future. Rumor has it that this is originally Matt Groening's (as opposed to another crew member's) idea. I have two questions.

First, what are your thoughts on this? Is it just Groening conforming to political correctness or a take on the topical gay marriage issue, or something else?

Second, who do you think it is? Popular suggestions seem to be Lenny, Carl, and Smithers.
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

I thought it was pretty obvious that smithers was gay... but thats just me.

i think it's realistic... i mean you cant tell me that a town like springfeild is just devoid of the fraction of the population that is in every other city :P

But we already know that Smithers is gay.

I say Lenny is gay.

Flanders would be an interesting choice, but then you get into a lot of issues about christianity etc, and I just don't think they'd do that on the simpsons.
And I don't see it as conforming, I've always found it a little hard to beleive that Smithers is the only gay man in Springfeild.
Besides, this is the simpsons, their doing it so they can make some jokes with it, duh

Oh, and as to who?
It won't be Smithers, thats way too obvious, and everybody knows it already except Monty Burns.
I'd be thinking Lenny or Carl, since their both freinds with Homer, that way they can make more of an issue with it.

I'd say it's topical humor, and Smithers seems too obvious, though I'm sure if it's not him he'll play a part in the episode for inuendo's sake. I think they like him as ambiguous. Maybe it's a female character. I've heard suggestions that it could be Patty or Selma.

The episode starts with something about Homer getting ordained a minister over the internet, and deciding to do same-sex weddings.

Maybe it's Hans Moleman...

oh yeah... and he's not trying to be PC... the simpsons (like south park, except south park does it way more) always pokes fun at whats going on in the world currently. for a while its been gays/gay marriage.

The entire episode was about him being openly gay. Smithers offered inuendo ther to "So this is your sick mother?" "Don't do this to me Wailan(sp?)..."

It said the character would be "coming out," so I think it's gonna be a complete surprise, like that episode where Maud Flanders died.

I'm interested what the response to this is.

Some states refused to air the Star Trek episode with the inter-racial kiss.

I wouldn't call it conforming to political correctness. They always poke fun at what's going on in the Simpsons and this is just another case of that.

I miss when Star Trek used to be cutting-edge in that area. It used to be one of the most liberal TV shows until, you know... everybody else realized that controversy = ratings.

I guess we should just be glad that Berman isn't trying to produce a science fiction-themed variation of Will & Grace.

I thought Smithers, lenny, and Karl were already gay.....

What on earth made you think Lenny and Carl were gay?
Smithers, yes, that sailor with the fish shop is definitely bi, but Lenny and Karl?

From what I have heard, Patty will be coming out. There are subtle hints dropped throughout the series if you pay attention, so it would be more of a surprise than say Smithers. I mean, is there are any dobut about Smithers?

I don't think Matt Groening is conforming to any kind of political correctness. The Simpsons was one of the first shows to deal with homosexuality realistically without exploiting it. Remember Karl? (Not the Lenny-and-Carl Carl, the "Simpson and Delilah, #7F02" Karl.)

I don't think Lenny and Carl were meant to be portrayed as "gay." I think it was that episode where Homer and Lenny become are pumping oil and Lenny points out the mountain sculpture of Carl he carved.

Why can't they just be friends? They have to be involved in a sexual relationship because they are close?

Whenever I hear gay I assume they mean males, I've never heard a woman being called gay, lesbian, but not gay.

I think it's just the Simpsons being the Simpsons. Which brings up another interesting point... I thought they quit making those [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

And all this time I thought the episodes I've been catching on TV the past couple of months were reruns...

They've basically spelled out that Patty swings that way over previous episodes. Personally I would like it to be someone we really dont expect. Hopefully not Lenny or Carl, though, they're 2 of the funniest characters just the way they are.

There's one where Homer runs naked past one of them and one of them (I can never tell the sisters apart) says (and I paraphrase extensively) "there go the last remaining shreds of my heterosexuality".
2004-07-30, 8:03 AM #39
I cant remember the rest of the episode, but there's one that starts with the Springfield Gay Pride Parade. Santa's Little Helper gets turned-on by a gay pitbull, Lesbians or the Carribean chase each other around a beach-themed float, Homer complains about everyone else having a 6-pack and him having a kegger, and Smithers and Patty stick their arms out of the closet on the Still in the Closet float saying 'We're gay, we're proud, but dont tell mom or dad", or something like that. Point is, it's clearly one of Marge's sisters still in the closet.
