i'm doing some research for a friend and he wants hdmi out to his tv. pretty much a multi media computer for home theatre and other stuff.

nvidia or ati? what should i look for?
i've looked at some reviews and as you may know i'm an ati guy but he doesn't care. he wants quality.

also, what about hd tv tuners? is it worth it or should he keep his hd box from his cable provider?

please and thanks.

My roommate's done some research into TV tuner cards for his HTPC, and he's found that Windows Vista apparently doesn't play nice with cable card readers that don't come stock with pre-built computers, so, consequently, he just got a Happauage TV-in card and fed the cable in from the cable company's top box.

I believe he got a GeForce 7600 or 7900 for his video card. Slickdeals.net has a deal on a DVI-to-HDMI cable. My roommate just uses his TV's VGA connection, though.

Yeah just get a DVI-to-HDMI adapter.

Would that adapter be HDCP compliant

No, it wouldn't. Monoprice has good adapters. Make sure you get the one that is appropriate for your video card.

What if your card supports HDCP over DVI? (I know, only newer cards do)

You can do that? O_o

yes. hdcp is actually a part of the dvi spec; hdmi is a condensation of dvi and a digital audio cable. making it basically useless for anybody with a decent sound system.

Yeah. My 7950 GT supports it.
