I usually conveniently remember nanowrimo mid to late November, and conveniently smile and nod. "Oh well, maybe next year?"

Some dirty son of a BuuBox just had to post his Spooking reminder to everyone that the month of 50,000 word novel contests was in a day.

KakDetty! Now I have no excuse.

Anyone else going to do it?

I went to the pre-NaNo meet & greet in Boston.

My fellow aspiring novelists can be grouped into six discreet categories:

  1. Burly, extremely hairy men. Writing: erotic zoo fiction or esoteric fantasy.
  2. Junior highschool girls with braces. Writing: Who knows, who cares.
  3. Really attractive but predictably taken English majors now in the real world and living off their boyfriends. Writing: About love.
  4. Bespeckled, extremely clean, pedo-probables. Writing: Sequels to their previous NaNo works
  5. Poorly-transitioned transgender authors. Writing: anything about which they can throw up their hands and exclaim (again) "Oh, joy!"
  6. Me. Writing: The next great American novel, dammit! :argh:

School is too hectic for me to finish, most likely. :gbk:

Publishers must really hate December.

I would like to participate. But I'm out of my house for work for 14 hours day.

If you really need a special month to get your *** into gear and write a novel, you're not author material.

You'd be surprised what people can do. Some of them just need a little nudge.

Mayhaps so. But you still need an excuse to get your *** in gear, doesn't sound like very good discipline to me. HOWEVER, this is just my opinion and I didn't mean it as a fact.

I apologize.

However, one thing I would like to point out is that 50000 words is about the size of a Goosebump novel (AKA 150 page manuscript). That is not much, where a large portion of manuscripts have anywhere from 250 to 450 pages.

Goosebump novel? Hehe

I could go for it someday. I think my sister actually finished her entry last year after 6 years of trying or whatever.

Maybe I'll write about burgers.

Research "writing practice." Just because people use a month as writing practice doesn't mean they aren't good writers.

And novels are HARD to write. Most writers can write 50,000 words (I write two times this with daily writing alone in a month) with no pain at all. 50,000 words of novel, however, are a lot harder. Even attempting is good enough practice writing for all of your other work. Myself, I'm a short story writer, so practicing with a novel helps wonders.

You are right. Apologies for the lashing out, I've been dealing with too many "I do NaNoWriMo and that makes me an author" type kids in light of this month. You see it as it should be however, and that makes you mighty.

Yes, of course, I am aware of that.

Honestly, how many hours a day does it take you to write your alleged 100,000 words a month?

I write an hour a day, minimum. Some days I write loads, other days I write only a page. The rule is to just write. Don't stop. Don't check the clock. Just write.

Also, I'm not sure it's 100,000 words. I just know I have well over 150 pages when I'm done with daily writing for the month.

I know a published author (see 30+ published books) who does 3-4 hours a day, 6 days a week, and pulls off about 40,000-45,000 words in 4 weeks. She takes about 1 of those work hours to review/develop/edit, but the bulk of that time is devoted to writing. Essentially, the way she works is she sets herself a quota of 6 pages a day (that would be approx. 250 words per page (12 courrier new, letter-sized, double spaced, 1" margins all around)).

Of course, she does this for a living, and sets limit, rather than sitting down and just slamming words down for as long as it comes.

I work somewhat differently but so far it all has paid off.

-----

Now, basing off on what I know, and giving you the benefit of the doubt, I will make a quick calculation :

150 pages over the span for 30 writing days (5 pages a day)

Format : 12pt, courrier new, letter-sized, single spaced (rather than typical double spaced), 1" margins all around (approx. 450-500 words/page)

150x500 = approx. 75,000 words. (IMO that's damn good, so kudos. :D)

-----

Now you got me really interested, what kind of format do you use?

((Please note: despite my earlier posts, I really didn't mean to come off as a high-nosed elitist and I appologies for those posts. :) That was me being my general grumpy self.))

To illustrate: My friend is 3.5K into his book, and day 1 isn't even over with, yet.

My word count? 0. I can't even start. So uncharacteristic of my usual writing habits.

It's not just about writing 5000 words a day--it's about writing 5000 words a day that's part of a novel. I assume around 10-20,000 he'll start to slow down considerably.

Oh yes, certainly. I'm just trying to illustrate that being able to write 50,000 words in a month isn't that hard at all.
