It has to do with newer forms of distribution (and DVD sales) where the writers aren't getting any of the profits that the companies who own the films/shows are getting.

they want $0.08 per DVD sale instead of $0.04. plus some kind of royalty on internet distribution, through iTunes or whatever.

You know considering the fact that I know a decent number of people that don't watch the show when it airs and catch it on iTunes instead, I think they've got a right to that money.
