Stupid sickness

I got sick a coulpe days ago. I'm now in the phase where my throat puts me through excrutiating pain when I try to swallow. Must have woken up 7 times last night because of it.

Yay for sickness season! .(

Try the most potent cough drops you can find, the kind loaded full of all sorts of anesthetics. Anything marketed as being for severe sore throats should work.

Sore throat spray helps a lot too, although they burn at first. You might almost want to open the bottle and gargle a little if it's that bad, because spraying doesn't usually last that long.

You'll probably want ibuprofen or naproxen (Advil or Aleve) for pain relief as they are anti-inflammatory. A good anti-inflammatory dose of ibuprofen is four tablets, I'm not sure about naproxen.

As you can see I've had quite a bit of personal experience on the subject. :colbert:

I bought what I perceived to be some highly effective lozenges yesterday, but there effect has been minimal :smith: I've never really been the drug buying type. Should 6mg of Benzocaine and 10mg of Mentol be effective? Because it really isnt.

I highly recommend Chloraseptics for the throat lozenges. I usually use those whenever my throat hurts (I get bronchitus on a yearly basis, it seems like) and they work miracles.

But yeah, soar throats suck.

Is Chloraseptic the actual name of the brand you are referring to? I got the Honey-Lemon variety, and like I said, they arent workin so great.

Snake, talk to a pharmacist. Tell him you've got a really bad sore throat and you want to strongest stuff they have.

When I got something that sounds similar to your condition back a long time ago, the doctor said to eat a lot foods that have sugar or salt to cut the crap out of your throat. But he also gave me medication.

I remind you, I'm not a doctor or anything, and it may not be healthy in your case to do what my doctor recommended me.

It could also be more than just a sore throat. Something like strep or tonsillitis.

Yeah, the brand name.

You're best off seeing a doctor, probably.

I had strep a few months ago; cough drops really didn't do much for me either. If you go to a doctor, ask him to prescribe you some predinsone with whatever medicine he gives you. My doctor gave it to me, and it made my throat feel better in about 10 minutes, allowing me to eat and drink comfortably again until the sickness was out of my body.

Not for another several days, because the doctor will just assume it's viral. If you haven't gotten better in about a week, there's a good chance it's something more than a virus.

I suppose a doctor could prescribe something for the pain, but it doesn't sound like Snake has tried proper lozenges yet.

Took some ibuprofen, pain has subsided in conjunction with another lozenge. Feels good.

seems like it could be strep, since the pain is actually waking you from sleep. go to a doctor as soon as possible. they will take a throat culture (swabbing the back of your throat) which will show if you have strep or not. if you do, he'll give you antibiotics which should take effect over a week. if you dont, well, just take OTC pain relievers until you get better.

if it is strep, it is important you go to the doctor right away. if left untreated, it's possible that you could develop some nasty infectious complications.
