Hooray for the dollar! The slide continues. http://ftalphaville.ft.com/blog/2007/11/07/8713/the-dollars-slide-13-down-and-falling-faster/ D:

It's so comforting to know that the US is off fixing the rest of the world now that we have everything under control here on the home front.

Yeah, I got angry when I saw that earlier. Now I have to work longer for the same amount of money I had planned for when I go to Europeland :argh:

Wow, so all this money I've made since being deployed is no longer worth as much as it was when I left the States.

That gives me a warm fuzzy feeling inside.

We just haven't started seeing the effects of the falling dollar. As the dollar falls, imports become more expensive, and that will just trickle down to the consumer.

Yea, but wouldn't costlier imports encourage domestic manufacturing thus ameliorating the problem somewhat?

Domestic manufacturing at a much higher cost. No matter how much technology and automation we have, we just can't match China, Taiwan, India etc. in manufacturing volume and cost/unit.

Well, no, you would manufacture it here only if it's economical. And that would happen as the dollar slides and imports become costlier.

Yeah, it would be cheaper to manufacture domestically than import when the market reaches that point. However, that tipping point is at an expense much higher than what we currently expect from manufacturing costs. Plus, the United States doesn't have all the raw materials needed to ramp up domestic manufacturing to match that of China's current levels. Either way, prices everywhere are going to go up.
