I second that motion. Be warned it's rather long though.

Amazing article. These copyrights have ruined music, turning it into "single-serving" songs. I'm pretty sure all artists, even the ones who aren't Gwen Stefani, Britney, and more, always think "will this profit me." This thought does affect music, making artist create songs sound preppy and awesome for a while, 'till the next song.

I like how he talks about how the big companies didn't get with the program using the internet. I mean, even politicians and presidential candidates are taking advantage of the internet.

And I never really knew about the Wal-mart thing.

Yeah, 30% (I've heard it at 40 and 50%, too) and the majority provider of the market is grounds for a monopoly. It doesn't allow for competition.

Walmart does that with everything I guess. Video Games too (they won't sell AO games so guess what? The industry can't make them).

Too lazy to read the article, but for the most part I buy directly from the artist.

If I buy a cd in a store though its usually best buy since thats closest to me >_>

Hmm I don't buy a lot of music.

I will now go listen to my huge collection of music.

I don't think I ever saw any "anti-piracy" ads like the "don't copy that floppy" one.

But, eh, it's just as lame as those "anti-drug" ads or promoters.

Like he said, the music companies should have been up to date with the internet.

Depends on the size of the other players: if they're smaller and not too numerous, but not significantly smaller as to be dwarfed you'd have an oligopoly instead, which CAN be ok. This is almost certainly not the case with Wal-mart though (in the US at least - here it's Tesco that wields most of the clout).

Oh, yeah. The only other competitors are sam goody and other outlet stores, and they're not even scratching Wal-mart.

I read it. It was good.

Speaking of which, the Puscifer album just came out....

Very good read! Now if only people who don't already agree with it will read it.

Not a bad read, but the article spouts the usual anti-RIAA sentiment everyone on the internet already supports. And as grand and justified as it feels to revolt against the oppressive system, devaluing music will leave artists underpaid because not every artist tours and merchandise is a weak alternative for income, especially for classical artists (unless we're talking about Yo-Yo Ma, I can imagine some great t-shirts with yo mamma puns)

I was going to come up with a Yo-Yo Ma joke but I'm struggling to think of anything. Can someone help me out? Thanks!
