140c CPU temperture

About a few weeks ago my PC started shutting down while playing games. I noticed that in the X2 4800+ started idling at 68, and when it shutdown was at 140c. Of course if it was 140c my mb would probably be on fire. Just wondering, could it be a bad sensor (my guess) or a bios glitch. Thanks.

Sweet jesus, Either a sensors busted or your 4800 is at critical mass.

I would think your computer would have shut down long before your cpu got that hot (so it might be broken sensor), but it might be a good idea to check the thermal adhesive and make sure the cpu cooling fan is working (some of the reviews on newegg say the fan that comes with that processor isn't all that good, as well as the stock thermal adhesive, so you might want to replace those).

The fan that came with my 4800 is great. Not sure if HP upgraded it somewhere along the line though.

I think the CPU automatically shuts down somewhere in the 110's.

I cleaned the heatsink and cpu core with hydron peroxide and reapplied some arctic silver 5 as well as adding an extra fan blowing onto the cpu. It has to be a sensor, my shutdown was a 75c, i turned it off so it wouldn't shutdown anymore. Hopefully it won't give anymore problems.

Use the generic, white silicon/zinc oxide paste. It conducts heat slightly less but won't dry out over time.

At 140 you're looking at almost 300 degrees fahrenheit.

But definitely don't let that arctic silver touch you. I hear that **** MELTS PEOPLE :tinfoil: :saddowns:

Really? I've gotten it on me before. It was hard to get off. I've only been trying to avoid touching it because it's freaking expensive, and skin cells hurt heat transfer.

My friend got it on him and got 3rd degree burns from it. Had to go to the hospital and everything. It was nuts.
