In all the futuristic movies iv seen, all the technology has been mechincal. Have u ever thought of biological mechines like the Zerg in SC. o0 humm yes.

In the Star Wars Black Fleet Crisis trilogy, there's a biological spaceship.

The problem with biological starships though is that they almost certainly fall under the category of genetic research and experimentation, which means there will always be lots of regulations preventing you from making progress, and you'll never be able to make everyone happy no matter what you do.

There were some biological species in Star Trek Voyager. My favorite alien in star trek in fact.. forgot what they were called.. t'was a bunch of numbers. They were from some other dimention and looked somewhat like zerg.. and sliced up a bunch of borg cubes.

Species 8472. They were great, I wish we could see more of them. They had bio ships and could walk around in space and such, they had a nice scene in one episode with one walking on Voy's hull.

And yep, they easily fought the Borg, almost took down Starfleet from the inside as well. They at least had definitely traveled to the Alpha quadrant and gotten enough info to even know about Boothby the main gardener. Now that would've made a very cool movie...

I'm sure it would be much more feasible to build stuff out of non-living resources like metal than to have to "grow" something. That's like trying to grow a massive cow and have it carry out functions designed by man. That would be quite difficult to handle, IMO.

Indeed. In fact, the fallacious thinking that "growing" things is better has always struck me as amusing. A lot of people think that nanotechnology will be the future of all technology because we'll be able to "grow" things. Meanwhile, macrobiologists know that there is no way to assure any sort of standard pattern. Imagine trying to "grow" a haircomb only to end up with half of the teeth 150% longer than needed.

Nanotechnology may be useful, however, for constructing devices like microprocessors and repairing organic tissue. But it'll always be better to cut bulkheads from solid metal.

It's especially hilarious to see people getting really excited about 'growing' technology when it's much slower to create and weaker. Metals are stronger, which is why we began to use them in the first place.

hehehehehehhee ;D

i think DS hit the nail on the head about regulations and whatnot... until someone leaves earth for such research and is not funded by any country (thus being free of any regulations) we will not see much of this kind of technology.

Regulations, irregularity, I think those are just side explinations people use after they've decided to go with mechanical designs (no matter how true they may be), because it's just so much more. Growing ship? Uh, kind of lame.

Talyn. And I hated it when they killed Crais. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/mad.gif] The series really went downhill from there, in my opinion.

Species 8472 is also pretty cool in Star Trek Armada II. But the zerg take the place as the coolest biological fighting force.
