Half-life question
2007-11-13, 9:11 AM #1
I could have sworn I've asked this before, but I couldn't find it with the Search feature.

I have the original HL, OF, and BS games and want to venture into the HL2 series, but I don't know what order they go in.

In essence, which comes first: HL2 or HL2 episode 1. It's probably obvious, but I'm in a room full of 13-yr-olds with scissors and can't think straight.

HL2 -> EP1 -> EP3

Half-Life, HL2, Episode 1, Episode 2, Episode 3.

Blue Shift is basically during HL 1, and I have no idea about Opposing Force.

IIRC Opposing Force chronologically starts somewhere near the middle of the HL1 storyline, shortly before Gordon leaves for Xen.

Somewhere in the middle of the OpFor storyline, you actually witness Gordon leaving for Xen. The actual timeline probably puts the beginning of OpFor (The Osprey Ride) at probably the first rumors of military forces you encounter in HL1's storyline.

Half Life, Blue Shift and Opposing Force all take place at the same time. Barney passes Gordon Freeman on their way into work, and Sheppard sees Gordon as he enters the first Teleporter.

Half Life 2 takes place ~5-10 years after the events of the original half life, Episode 1 and 2 just continue the storyline in a linear fashion.

As of this writing, Barney Calhoun still owes Gordon Freeman a beer.

Actually, it seems more like 20 to me. Eli looks a LOT older than in Hl1 (although Eli's Hl1 model is fairly generic) and the picture of the baby in Gordon's locker looks a bit like Alyx. (The picture in Eli's lab also shows Alyx as a baby or toddler, and Eli said that it was all he could take out of Black Mesa, which means that Alyx had to be close to that age at the time) Also, Eli mentioned that Gordon hadn't changed at all appearance-wise, which implies that a significant amount of time had gone by.

Ah, thanks, all.

HL2 is now officially on my Christmas list. :)

I've got free gift givaways of HL2 and HL2:EP1 on Steam, I have absolutely no use for them so if you'd like I could just give them to you.

It's the whole Orange Box, right? Orange box has HL2 and HL2: Episode 1 along with Portal/TF2/Ep2

Something that used to bug me about Opposing Force: what happened to Sheppard? Did he really just get left in limbo by G-man or what? That would suck.

That would be flippin' awesome! (assuming I can get Ep2 and Portal separately on Steam)

Just like Gordon Freeman, presumably, he's just held in stasis until the G-man decides he needs him (Or valve decides it'd make a cool game >.>)

I doubt Valve owns the character. Gearbox does.

And don't forget, Portal takes place in the HL/HL2 world, but there is little indication about where it fits. However all clues present seem to point to shortly before HL1.

Half Life came first, Blue Shift started at the beggining and ended near the middle (when gorden was captured by l33t spec ops
Opposing Force began about 1/3 through half life, It only really started near the end though, and went on to about 3/4 hours after the end.

Half life 2 directly flows into episode one and two

I didn't know that was suppose to be Eli Vance. I thought it was suppose to be a generic black scientist.

On the topic, I'm guessing the Half-Life series can't really go back to the remains of Black Mesa. I assume it was nuked at the end of Opposing Force?

His appearance would make more sense than Dr. Magneson's.

You realize they would probably need a nuke that would cause near irreparable damage to the planet to actually destroy Black Mesa right? Black Mesa goes like well over a mile below natural rock formations and government grade reinforced concrete.

So? Shove a good 25 megaton beast down there and forget about it.
2007-11-13, 4:38 PM #26
Adrian Sheppard disarmed the nuke, but the G-man re-armed it

When you play episode 2 remember the name of the first chapter in half life.
It has extreme significance.

No he doesn't. That was inserted as a nod to how lame it was to see the same character model that said the same things 500 times in a row.

Barney Calhoun isn't the security guard at the front gate, he's the security guard gordon passes on the train that is stuck outside the door.

IIRC, when you play Blue Shift, Barney (you) make it to the front gate.

I was under the impression it was pre/during Half-Life 2. Thus GLaDOS's lines "the world has changed since you last left the building", and how she's "the only thing standing between us and them". "Them" I've always assumed to be the Combine.

IIRC, the scientist who opens the retinal-scan door in Unforeseen Consequences is supposed to be Eli. In Hl1, he sent Gordon up for help, (in the room with the three plasma globe things in it) and in HL2, Eli stated, "...The last time I saw you, I sent you up for help after the resonance cascade; I didn't figure it would take you this long for you to get back to me!"
