Decent AGP video card to replace FX 5900?
2007-11-23, 6:40 PM #1
Will you please recommend a decent but inexpensive card to replace my FX 5900 which sucks? I need another nvidia card due to linux driver issues with AMD cards (heard they're getting better, but not willing to jump in just yet). I don't have PCI express... I have a P4 3.2ghz if it matters. Thanks!

How much are you willing to spend on it?

Just remember to see if your power supply can handle it, some of the 7800/7900 cards require a 350W powersupply and certain amount of amps per rail.

I'm interested, what are we looking at?

I have a hefty power supply, but I can pick up a new one if I need it.

I know what the 7900GS is, I just wasn't sure they made an AGP version.

EDIT: For the 6800GT you won't need a new power supply if it's over 300w, almost guaranteed. Good ****ing card too, will play anything released recently, albeit not very well...but it'll play it!

How about 75 bucks? That way I am buying it from someone I know (sort of) so I don't have to worry about it not working, and if it doesn't work, I'll just convince CM to ban you ;)

So I'm seeing 7800GS and GF7950GT AGP cards on craigslist, are those faster than the 6800? I remember there used to be "base" versions that were actually slower than the previous generation in a lot of cases. Opinions?

x1950 pro 512 meg AGP for 220$
Google found it.

I do believe he said no AMD/ATI. Driver issues with Linux.

Beyond the fact that he was looking for cheap.

Maybe I should start a new thread, either nobody sees my question or they don't know the answer :(

Neither of those are gimped I believe, they should be a good deal faster than the 6800, especially the 7950GT.

I'm currently using a 7950GT, but mine's a PCIE16, not AGP.

Yeah, I have one too. I like it. I had a 7800 GT that had issues and they replaced it with this.

I still rock out a 6600 (should've got the 6800 but oh well) and it works just fine, playing games like HL2

My computer is getting old. I need a new one but won't have the money for another year or so. I ordered a replacement sound card and 2gb of memory, and I have a dvd burner sitting here that needs to be installed as well. I figured I'd throw in a new graphics card because I know my processor is fast enough to handle the games I want to play, but my graphics card is really crappy. I figured jumping ahead a single generation would be great, but it seems like it would be better to go to the 7900 GS or the 7950 GT. There are a couple of these for sale here on craigslist for around $100.

Some games I can run but I want to run better are things like CoD2, UT 2k4, and other shooters that aren't the latest and greatest. My computer runs older games ok, but I still get framerate drops in busy scenes and they annoy me.
