ummm so i got some spyware on my computer im not sure how someone used it when i was at work cause when i came home i saw icons of free casinos n **** jizzed all over my desktop

anyway ive gotten arid of alot of it except one part that makes the webpage sometimes go to something different.... but thats not what i need help with maybe it is but not right now.... hopefully McAfee will pick it up...


but the virus made it so i coudlnt go to my control pannel and its starting to annoy me... also just now i noticed that i cant go to my desktop properties and my graphics card isnt (stuff is moving around slow and choppy ect)

how do i fix this?

What OS? I would try Safe mode and restoring from a previous restore point.
That might fix the control panel links. Hopefully you have some sort of anti-spyware, You might want to checkout Windows Defender if your running XP.

IE redirection is often caused by something called a browser helper object, you might want to look at BHODemon or something similar to see what is automatically loading with IE.

It sounds like the whole system is hosed since stuff like Control Panel is broken.

Even if you could restore all functionality, I wouldn't trust the current installation at all.


I would just back up and reinstall if I were you. It's the only way to make sure you have gotten rid of everything.

Formatting fixes everything.

Actaully I was thinking the same thing, but sometimes people lose their install CD's which makes it a difficult option.

Of course this thread wont be complete until someone comes in and recommends installing Linux.

Yeah, system restore back to before it got messed up and then download and run GIANT antispyware. It should catch it.

any sugestions for anti spyware??.

also i get an error when i log on it says windows cant find shell.exe

System restore should work, but if you can be safe and just format.

format would be a last resort for me....

Dude, I mean you've only been told seven times formatting is the best way to fix it. And the best way to prevent it is using a little god damn sense.

Reboot to safe mode log into YOUR user account (not Administrator)

Open REGEDIT

Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENT VERSION\POLICIES\EXPLORER

On the right, if you see a DWORD or REG_SZ that says NoControlPanel delete it entirely. Furthermore, if there are other things besides an REG_SZ that says Default delete it too.

Now navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENT VERSION\POLICIES\EXPLORER

You should be able to reboot and the system applet problem should be gone. I would recommend downloading the trial version of Spyware Doctor, updating it and scanning the whole system to get the rest of the variants. McAfee won't find it. This is a variant of Vundo, Virtumonde, and SmitFraud.c all rolled into one big nasty file. And finally, stop looking at porn. I don't care that you said you were at work or whatever. But a sticky note that says, "Hey. You're not smart enough to use the internet for porn." on your monitor might help. Maybe "whoever infected your computer" will get the point. Things are still running choppy at this point because you are still infected.


Furthermore, everybody needs to quit giving bull advice on threads like this. A simple spyware infection does not require formatting, and statements like Rob's don't do anything to help the OP. If you can't give him a real way to do it, then don't post. This infection in particular is UNBELIEVABLY easy to remove.

I can almost guarantee that if he has that he probably has ALOT more.

I also got System Restore to work as well... i tried it in safe mode under Administrator and it worked so everything is right back to the way it was supposed to be
