Cool program for exchanging huge files (and entire folders) over the web
2007-12-05, 6:50 AM #1
GigaTribe is fun and practical new software that allows you to share specific folders on your computer with friends (or professionals!) located anywhere there is an internet connection, and best of all, it's free!

Basically, you select specific folders (and therefore files) on your computer which you want to share and then you invite your friends into your network. They can therefore download files (and even entire folders of files) onto their computer and you can do the same from the folders on their computer that they're willing to share. You can even use GigaTribe to access your computer from a remote location (work, etc...).

It's 100% safe (256-bit blowfish encryption, no spyware/adware), you can transfer huge files (no-limit) and it's easy to set up. Furthermore, all exchanges are encrypted, so your exchanges remain confidential. For more info or to download free GigaTribe, go to www.gigatribe.com. I'm open to any feedback or questions you may have, just post them here or shoot me an email at john at gigatribe dot com.

Wow this sounds great it's not like every single IM program has had this feature for the past 10 years or anything.

Sure, apps like MSN Messenger allow you to send a large file to a friend, but this is the other way around, you select folders you want to share, and your friends have access to them anytime you're online. Also, interrupted exchanges resume with no data loss, unlike a majority of IM programs out there ;-)

Also, you can upload/download entire directories of files, something no IM program does (and if I'm wrong let me know!)

Doesn't MSN Messenger have sharing folders? I've not used it myself, but I'm pretty sure it works on a similar principle.

Any VPN software can already do this using Windows' built-in LAN file sharing. Hamachi, and OpenVPN are two that I have used to do it.

Also you can send folders of files across IM services... I just did it last week. Compressed it into a 7zip file which also saved bandwidth and transfer time, which it doesn't sound like your program does.

I'm surprised this hasn't been locked yet... this is a discussion forum, not an advertisement board.

Quite the opposite! Out of many jobs I've had, promoting a fun software app is the bee's knees!! When was the last time your boss said it was cool to file-share on the job?!

Not familiar with OpenVPN, I've tried Hamachi and it seemed a bit slow plus the interface isn't as intuitive. GigaTribe doesn't zip files, it's not so much designed to send (push) files to other people, it's more about allowing access to your folders to let others download (pull) whatever they want, with no size limits...

Being a lifeguard is a great gig as well, ladies LOVE lifeguards. Unfortunately I'm not into swimming through huge waves and chasing after screaming kids!

funny how this thread has changed...

johnarama you seem a nice enough guy, but registering and advertising software here on the forums won't endear you to the locals ;)

You're thinking of lifeguarding at a beach. This is in no way, shape or form like guarding at a YMCA.

I learned about this in Marketing. People get paid to infiltrate online communities and promote goods and services. Employing people instead of bots gives the message a "human face" and allows the salesperson to try to endear themselves to the community and answer questions.

I was kind of pissed off that services like this exist... it's like somebody joining a church congregation and suddenly trying to sell Bibles to everybody, or joining a frat and suddenly trying to sell boxes of condoms. :S

I say we hand out the same treatment we hand out to bots -- I'll heat up the tar if somebody plucks the feathers.
Cordially,

I'm about to blow your mind.

There's this thing called "FTP". Perhaps you've heard of it? It's been around for at least 2 decades, has support on nearly any OS in existance, has tons of options in terms of software, it's reliable, it's fast, and with SSL extensions, it's also secure.

Also, what good is sharing massive files (as your service seems based on) when uploading a file is limited by the person's internet connection? Especially consider that the vast majority of people have DSL or Cable, where upload speed is far inferior to download speed.

Sounds like your "service" is a big waste of time to me.

Even better, certain locker room policies at the Y I just quit would make pedophiles fairly happy.

i think its a pretty good idea. it's like setting up an ftp server but idiot-proof.

So, what? Is this an SFTP server only with crappier encryption?

Jon, does the S stand for stupid?
