Last Saturday we had our annual company Christmas party. It was a lot of fun as usual but it featured one special surprise. It turns out that several people had been secretly working late nights and into the wee hours of the morning preparing a special video for those at the party. They created a short teaser for Duke Nukem Forever.

After seeing the teaser we thought it was something we should share with all of you and while it's just a teaser, rest assured more is coming.

Tomorrow, Wednesday the 19th, around noon CST, we will release the first teaser trailer from Duke Nukem Forever. To tide you over until then, here is a screen shot taken from the teaser.

Thank you for being fans of the game and for your continued patience.

I'd like to thank the people on the team that worked so hard to create this teaser and the friends of 3DR that helped create it (Jeremy Soule and Julian Soule, Frank Bry, Jason Evigan and of course, Jon St. John).
First off, resize.

Second off, I'll believe it when it's on the store shelves.

Hey lets demand more eyecandy for our appetites and then complain when what we demand ahead of schedule isn't sufficient. Seriously guys, they've obviously had to start the whole thing over from scratch multiple times, given the development time. Naturally they'll take a long time, and in the meantime dont demand so much, just enjoy what you do get.
DO NOT WANT.
2007-12-18, 7:53 PM #12
Maybe if they had just done it in the first place we wouldn't be in a "New Engine" cycle.
2007-12-18, 7:59 PM #13
that's a totally reasonable thing to ask, too.
DO NOT WANT.

Hey, They got TF2 done before DNF, They got HL2 and Episodes one and two done, They even got STALKER out the door, Doom 3, etc.

I really just hope it's worth it.

They've still been working on this iteration for a long time now.

Almost all of those started development after DNF. Actually, I'm pretty sure all of them did.

yeah I'm totally wrong, I mean shiny everything and bumpmapping and keeping everything jagged is completely NEW I mean its not like that hasn't been done with Doom3 or anything.
But no keep getting excited everyone. I'm not here to pop your bubble about a pre-rendered trailer or anything that doesn't show any new technology or really...ANYTHING.
2007-12-19, 6:51 AM #25
Skin is shiny. Do you have skin? If it's not shiny you should probably use a moisturiser or switch to a new soap.

I don't know exactly what 'next-gen' bells and whistles you're expecting of a screenshot that doesn't even show a background. Stuff like HDR or motion blur aren't going to be apparent in a screenshot like this even if they're in the actual game. For what it's worth, the lighting contrast and bump-mapping look great and the smoke looks pretty great to me, too. There's a subtle light bloom which looks nice and isn't blindingly obvious. As for "jaggies," that's generally what happens when you use polygons. Kind of every game has them. Seriously, I just played some Bioshock and they were totally there. I was like, guys srsly why are you in my game and they were like dude we're jaggies we're always here.

And no one ever said this was a pre-rendered video. And if it were, why the hell would you be complaining about how it looks? A pre-rendered video wouldn't be any indication of the actual game.

All I ever remember 3drealms promising was a next-gen experience, and technically the next-gen is now current-gen I've got to say it looks pretty current-gen to me. Which is next-gen. Dig?

Also the trailer hasn't been released yet and no one knows what's going to be in it, so you really can't be commenting what technologies it will or wont be showing.

There is no next gen. "Next gen" is a buzz word that means the two year old graphics that run on modern consoles at 1280x720, and is often smothered in bloom and other hideous post processing effects in a pathetic effort to make them still seem exciting and new. It's not that they are bad, it's just that they
are no longer amazing, or even exciting. There really are no games on the radar that look like they will have better graphics than Crysis which by definition is in the current generation of game. It's just as well, because you can't max the game out on any system to save your life, the lack of competition on the hardware front is retarding innovation.

The trailer makes me feel a bit giddy inside, so I really hope it's gonna get finished.

And mega-properly so everyone who ever whined about its long development would cease to exist. Oh the dreams!

There's no way it will live up to the expectations now.

Even if it's the most amazing game ever.. People will expect more from it.

Plus, I'm wondering... It's was supposed to be "next-gen." Well as was pointed out, "next-gen" is now "current-gen" so by the time it comes out, it'll be mediocre by the standards of the other games that are current.

People always have unnaturally high expectations for everything, still hasn't stopped from a lot of games becoming really popular. And those that haven't become really popular still have strong fanbases full of people who actually can appreciate it.

And I assume they know the next gen thing as well and if they play their cards right, they're gonna release something that's way ahead of a lot of upcoming games. Who knows.

Right, I'm not saying it won't be a great, awesome game. I'm just saying that if it's anything less than OMFGIJUSTCRAPPEDMYPANTSPECTACULAR then it's gonna fall short. Further, I really doubt that it's going to be OMFGIJUSTCRAPPEDMYPANTSPECTACULAR for the reason below. (note: I have a very rudimentary understanding of game development, so I may be off base here but I doubt it.)

Now, when a game is made they start with an engine, either by developing a new one or buying rights to or using an existing one. I assume they're developing a new engine for Duke Nukem. Once that engine has been developed, that's like the foundation for the game, right? Then they go on to finish the game. Now once the engine's been developed, that's it. It's got certain capabilities and certain limitations, and nothing can be done to move beyond that, right? (Granted, game engines can be tricked into doing stuff not expected, as we've seen with Jedi Knight, but you're still limited to the original limitations of the engine.) So, with that in mind, unless the game engine is way beyond any current technology (not likely based on the screenshot), then the game is going to be equivilant to current technology. Now if the game takes 2 more years to come out, then it's outdated, unless they update the engine, but if they do that, it will take even longer, and once again they lose the time race against inovation.

Am I on the right track here?

*blink* So much text.

Give me one example of a game that was hyped to be OMFGIJUSTCRAPPEDMYPANTSPECTACULAR and fell into obscurity after it came out and wasn't as "good" as hyped. I would say 'Bioshock' but it actually has a pretty solid fandom after all.

Yeah, I think Burrie once mentioned how the actual game wasn't that great. But I thought it still was very popular especially after the expansions were released.

STALKER? Well, that could be a good example, yet I thought it wasn't even that great to begin with. So I'd still want to know a game that actually was good, innovative and impressive but fell through because the common gamers weren't impressed.

Other than Deus Ex.
