I Need Game SUGGESTIONS!
2008-01-03, 1:15 PM #1
Alright the last two parts for my new rig are coming in tomorrow. I wanna get some new games to enjoy the 8800GT with.

Base specs:

Intel DC2 Conroe E6750
2GB mem
8800GT.

The only bottleneck I will have on the system overall will be the hard drives (IDE - ATA133) but will be swapped later for a SATA.

I stopped chasing after Crysis long ago when I realized my comp would never play it, but now im wondering what its like.

Also, Bioshock... do i NEED to play it? I never found Half Life 2 to be 'omgz AMAZIUNG' but its fun to play none the less. I do plan on getting TF2 and Portal through steam (already have HL2 and EP2)

Anyways.. just looking for suggestions. I'm mostly looking forward to playing Oblivion again with everything maxed.

edit: Oh yeah, ANY games will do if they are good ones. I like RTS, FPS, just about anything thats a 'quality game'. Doesn't necessarily have to be cutting edge or anything. (I'm playing FF7 again for like the 5th time and loving it again)

Crysis is good, not amazing but really fun and goddamn sexy.
TF2 is just ****ing rapeface. That's the only way to explain it.
Bioshock is fun, but with little replay value.
Don't worry about your harddrives, they're not a bottleneck in any kind of performance--your biggest bottleneck is either only having 2gb of RAM or the 8800GT vs having a GTX.
Replay games that you got okay fps on and find out how much more interesting they are at full speed with everything on.

Rinse, repeat.

i'll probably pickup another 2gb of ram before too long, just figured 2 was enough to get me started. Also, I thought the hard drives effect load times. I know processor and memory do, but if the drive cant feed them as fast as they can chew info up and spit it out then wouldn't that be an issue?

As for games, thanks! Any others? Bioshock, when you say little replay value, is this Doom3 bad replay, or Farcry bad replay (each being opposite ends of the spectrum heh)

They kinda do, but it's not so bad you'll really notice. Besides, I wouldn't pay any extra money just for load times...

It can be replayed with a decent amount of fun to be had, but generally you only wanna play through once. Also I forgot Quake 4 which is pretty fun overall.

What about the new UT game, is it any good? I know it looks sextacular.

Orange Box is a must.

Crysis will still look good on medium, and is a pretty fun play through.

Supreme Commander is fun, if you like RTSs.

UTIII might be ok, but I'd wait a bit for them to get their stuff together. They've kind of dropped the ball on this one, and it's still up in the air as to weather they'll bother to fix it.

You obviously don't have it.

Its fine, its just like every other UT game, nothing changes except the graphics.

UT3 is meh. It's not great, it's not amazing, and the fanbase is tiny.

It's pretty much the skidmark of the UT collection. Honestly I'd rather play UT2k4. And that saddens me to say :\

2k4 is the most fun out of them all... but UT>UT2k3...

so maybe they hit and mis... UT=win, 2k3=lose, 2k4=win, UT3=lose, UT2k10=win

What? You do know 2k4 is just 2k3 with vehicles right? There was absolutely no other changes (other than some model modifications).

I know, vehicles and better mission levels is what made 2k4 more fun really...

And a thousand bug fixes that improved game performance. UT2K3 was truly a terrible release.

That's what they make updates and patches for. I never had a problem with 2k3 really.

And I really don't think many people play UT for the singleplayer...if you do, you have a weird perspective of what singleplayer gaming should be.

I play it for practice (or used to). It makes your aim and dodging skills better for multiplayer. Granted, people shoot better than the bots do. Either way, its a good way to brush up on your UT skills before diving into multiplayer slaughter.

Or...you can just play multiplayer.

UT3 is awesome. It looks beautiful (no matter what they say) and words can't bring it down. Get the collectors edition, comes with newest UnrealEd along with oodles of tutorial videos. The game is phenom for how well it runs (blazing fast... makes crysis seem like a turd in a lot of ways... I own both I can say it.)

Crysis is cool AT FIRST... I am about 5-6 hours in and its just well annoying. The guns suck and hinder the gameplay in my opinion.

Awesome setup though. As long you have the 512 of 256bit memory for the m9x you are pretty much taken care of for this and the next line of games.

Hum, if you're interested in Doom3 or Quake IV I will sell mine for cheap. I need to do that thing tracer did and sell all my old games. (pm me if you're interested, probably won't be reading this thread)

I'm really enjoying STALKER so far.

UT3 is good and all, but sorry it doesn't hold a candle to Crysis' graphics and interactive environments.

And it's not really that "blazing fast", and I really wouldn't reccommend anyone buying it at this point, mostly because the online component is just so lacking, and that's what makes Unreal the game it is.

Except the Single-player is what makes UT, UT. The Dev's have already stated most gamers never went online with UT and thats why they spent a lot of time on the bots.

Haha are you kidding me. I'll admit the bots are good, but they're also good in Q3 and I'd say that Q3's singleplayer isn't what made Q3 the game it is.

I'm sorry, but saying singleplayer is what made unreal tournament so great is just laughable, really. Also, I'd like to see where the developers said this.

I played the demo for awhile, and there was list of fixes that wouldn't have taken that much time to implement but never happened. I'll consider buying the game when those things are fixed, but if they aren't even dedicated to the game enough to fix those little issues, no way will I put money down for that.

There's is a good game in there, but with out the dev. support they've provided in the past, it may be headed for an early grave.

Honestly UT3 is just an engine demo and it shows. It looks pretty, but the best game on the engine so far, as much as it pains me to say this, is Gears.

KOP: I have to ask, why in the WORLD did you go the stupidly expensive route of not getting the Orange Box???
2008-01-05, 5:58 PM #31
Huh? If you mean why did I buy HL2 and EP2 seperate, well... i got em before orange box i guess? I dunno.

Anyways, I got the orange box. TF2, Portal, here i come.... again.

Wait- are you sure you aren't talking about EP1? Because it goes Hl2-> EP1 -> EP2. EP1 is the one where you are in the city and citadel. EP2 takes place in a forest.
2008-01-06, 1:07 PM #35
Because you like Age of Empires, I think you'll enjoy Company of Heroes.
2008-01-07, 5:19 AM #36
oops yes i got EP1 and 2 confused. I meant 1.

Company of Heroes is boring. Sadly I now own two copies of the game... (video card came with it)...
