You can usually get the HD-DVD attachment with a number of free HD-DVD movies for about $150.

It's 100 bucks on its own nowadays.

Wait, how is $100 for an HD-DVD player a ripoff? Do you mean because it doesn't come with the 360 to begin with? The cheapest HD-DVD player I know if is a Phillips one being sold at Wal-Mart for $200.

Microsoft doesn't make much money selling 360s, it's not like they are gouging.

I'm saying because it didn't come with the 360 to begin with yes. They can afford to drop it for another hundred, but at that point you're talking 400 bucks at least, 450 or 550 more likely.

It may not be gouging but that doesn't mean it isn't a ripoff.

Also, I could be wrong, but I'm 99% sure you can't even do 1080p with it. I think you're actually limited to 720p. Could be wrong, don't feel like researching.

Well if it is limited to 720p it would most certainly be a ripoff, considering that HD-DVD supports 1080p. You may be thinking of how many games only output to 720p due to hardware constraints (1080p is too slow).

Not quite. AACS limits HD-DVD playback to a maximum of 1080i over component (not just a limitation of the 360 drive, but any HD-DVD player). VGA and HDMI, however, can play 1080p just fine. In the end though, it doesn't really matter unless your 1080p movie is in 1080p/60, which it likely isn't, since films are generally 1080p/24. 1080p/24 content can easily be converted to 1080i/60 via 3:2 pulldown and nothing is actually lost. 1080p is pretty much useless when it comes to film.

They're 200 bucks or so, and if you're looking for a player probably more capable compatible. The only boon for the 360 version is that it works on PC too.

Considering Warner just announced they're going all Bluray, HD-DVD probably isn't the best investment now anyway.

1080i over component 1080p over vga or hdmi

cheapest 1080p standalone player is $300 everything below that is 1080i

only advantage of the standalone is it will output the advanced audio codecs while the 360 downconverts to 640kbps dolby digital or 1.5Mbps DTS (also digital stereo and wma pro but i doubt anybody actually uses those options) plus the 360 is less prone to the issues some people have with the combo discs (alot of people with stand-alone players have had issues with combos not playing or freezing mid movie)

plus with the offer for 5 free movies you cover more than half the cost of the player with the value of the free movies... plus the player comes with one movie

either way it doesn't matter if you're thinking of getting into HD it would pay to wait a little longer to see how the hd-dvd side is going to react to the rather serious situation that popped up today... warner (who always seemed to lean toward red) going blu hurts if any neutral studio went blu i would have suspected new line to jump ship first... oh well a war is not lost until it is lost...

New Line has declared Blu-Ray exclusivity too. Then again it is the sister company of Warner Bros. so no surprise there.

The thing is, PS2 was significantly better than Dreamcast. The PS3 isn't much better than the 360. At least not yet.

They forgot to mention that to pirate Dreamcast games, all you had to do was burn them. That's a pretty big reason for failure. Any dummy can download and burn a game.

Actually, they weren't so far apart as you may think. My friend does a lot of Dreamcast devving and he says they're pretty ****ing close to each other.

I paid less than $99.99 for my HDDVD player..which came with a 5-free-HDDVDs offer..

Plus, PS2 = jaggies.

Dreamcast = no jaggies.

That alone made it look better, even if the PS2 had better specs. (Which in reality they were pretty close)

Thus, It's a profit really.

Yeah, especially when you're playing 640x480. When you're pushing 16**x1*** it's not so noticeable, but at that resolution any jaggedness is amplified times ten.
