[TECH] New system, no video signal?

Alright here is what I have.

430W PS
intel DC E6750
Asus mobo (would have to get the model number)
8800GT
2 optical drives
2 hard drives (IDE)
3 case fans

At first I considered lack of power, so i unhooked the fans and an optical drive.
That didn't work. The video card came with a big piece of paper that says "use TWO 6-pin connectors to properly power the card" yet there is only ONE port on the card. It came with a dual 4pin to single 6pin converter... should i use that?

I'm trying to exhaust all possibilities before assuming a part is DOA.

suggestions?

Yes use that, also I'm 99% sure your ****'s still underpowered. Your CPU and videocard combined probably draws down 350 watts. Also consider what your 12v rail can do on that PSU.

I'd suggest RMA'ing the PSU and getting a 500w at least.

Yeah... I was hoping to avoid that too.... egh.

I'm going to go get another power supply tonight, if that doesn't work, is there any way to individually test the parts without having to find someone with a similar system to swap parts in and out of?

Not really. Personally I'd get the power supply then go from there. Just one question--does it even beep on startup?

It should at least boot up, if the PSU is any good. What are it's specs? Brand? Amps on the 12V rail?

I swapped in a 550W PSU and it still only starts up. No picture. It doesn't even give the typical 'BEEP' most PCs (or at least what my old one did) when it boots. I took everything back out of it. Plugged in ONLY the vid and mobo (6pin to the vid, 12v to the board, and 24pin to the board)

I get nothin. I have no other video card or machine to test this junk on either.... bah.

The 430W PSU is a thermaltake. This 550 is an Antec (I hate antec, i have ran two previous PSUs from them and both died in under 2 years)

it should work just fine. I think I either have something installed wrong or a dead part.

Someone thought it would be a good idea to dump it, plus no one ever looked in there to help.

Don't you have a 6800GT? Because I'm about 99% sure an 8800GT would suck down a lot more power.

Also, it's your motherboard then, I'll bet you 50 bucks. It's probably a DOA.

Yeah after swapping parts with a friends PC, we determined its a dead mobo, thanks for the help everyone... BTW the card ran Crysis on my friends computer 1024x768 @ 30+fps with everything on high in DX9. So I'm looking forward to this machine :D

is that 30 fps including the frozen bit? That killed mine...
2008-01-07, 8:04 AM #15
Yeah he was in some frozen bubble fighting the 'aliens' or whatever trying to save his buddy that was freezing cuz his suit was damaged... (i dunno the story or plot or anything about the game so thats the best detail i can give)

Also keep in mind that his processor and ram were both weaker than my setup. I think he had 2gb of 400mhz DDR or DDR2, and an AMD X2 i think. Somewhere around 2ghz

I'm finally upgrading my CPU from a 3000+ to a 3800+ X2.

And I'm going to overclock that ****er like mad. I suggest you do the same--core2duo's and 8800GTs are both known for overclockability.

I have a pretty good stepping Opteron 165 that's only running at 2.4 GHz because I was too lazy to do everything slowly and properly. I basically found a significantly high stable north bridge speed, and then set the CPU to 2.4GHz, because I knew than that would be safe. I think the RAM is even on some stupid multiplier that's making it run below spec, because I didn't want to bother with that either. One of these days I'm going to get this thing running though.
