Software Engineering.....

I'm in my third year now, but I can't help, but wonder if I'm heading in the right direction. Last semester was the first time I have been exposed to more classes relating my major so this means I'm now placed in other classes with people sharing my major. However, I look at all these other students and they all seem very passionate about software engineering. Meanwhile, I don't give much of a damn other than scoring high grades and hopefully securing an internship for the summer.

Especially with programming, for me it's only a means to an end. In contrast with some other students, wow I swear they have hard-ons when they're introduced to a new programming language. Some of them in their spare time will program for fun. I personally can't do that. I don't necessarily hate programming, but I don't love it either. It's like brushing your teeth; there are some stuff you would rather do than brushing your teeth, but sometimes brushing your teeth is better than doing other activities.

My co-worker is like you. He seems quite happy where he is. I think getting an internship will give you a glimpse into whether or not software engineering is for you. It's also worthwhile to point out that there are many kinds of software engineers - at my company, we've got people who write front-end applications, people who write proprietary libraries that are used by those front-end developers, people who write tools to be used internally, and people like myself, who work on the back-end and review/maintain/debug/support existing code with a dash of development.

I, personally, am of the "hard-on for other languages" variety. People in software engineering have varying levels of enthusiasm - just as you'll find in any other field. The question is, can you see yourself programming for a large part of your life? If not, then perhaps you should consider another major, because, for the time and money you're putting into it, it'd be a waste for you to go into something you loathe.

Constantly programming for a large part of my life...uh oh. I'm not too sure to be frank. It's something I can do, but I don't want else I would do besides this major. I will say this, I don't mind doing all the documentation to say the least. Besides it seems like it's a bit too late to consider a change of any time at this time point after all the time spent. I think one Massassian (Brian maybe?) mention a long time ago that you "work to make meet ends and then use your free time to do what you really enjoy."
