So you met the person of your dreams....

Saw this as a GameFAQs post so I decide to bring it here.

Suppose you married the guy/girl who is close to perfect. She has everything you ever wanted, similar hobbies to her, etc. But as fate would have it, she becomes involved in a freak accident that leaves "several large scars and lumps all over, her body is contorted into a shape that isn't even slightly attractive by "normal" standards, and she's blind in one eye. She now has some trouble doing any physical exercise for more than about twenty minutes at a time and also requires daily medication."

"Now, the question is: would you let this affect your relationship, and if so, how?"

Judging by the response by most of the GameFAQ posters, seem a majority of them would leave her. Here are some example responses.

Quote:
Look, if she's not attractive in the slightest--and plastic surgery is not an option--the relationship will not last. It's one thing to accept that your lover is past her prime after a few decades together, but it's quite another to be thrust into that situation when the two of you are still young and should be in the prime of your lives.

Quote:
Even for you romantics out there, this is a total phail. You'll have little in common with this woman now and she'll likely become a burden physically, financially, and emotionally. No kids for you, and very little going out and just relaxing. Then how much do you love her? Self-deprivation is so sweet, isn't it? Eventually you'll be going on out of pure obligation--and that's if you manage to avoid resenting her later in life.

Quote:
Of course I'd stay with her. Crippled girls are sexy as hell.

Quote:
I'd end her misery and throw her in the river.

It'd be extremely tragic, but I would still love her very much, and take care of her. If she was so perfect, then looks wasn't the reason I married her in the first place.

Also, this scenario doesn't seem all that bad to me when compared to living with someone that has Alzheimer's. It's still loving someone after they crap all over the walls and throw it at you, and being able to clean up that kind of mess and still be patient and loving that boggles my mind. [edit] And then to not have them recognize who you are... it's just... wow.

Love != physical attraction. That may be a small facet of it or get it started, but it would never make or break any real relationship. If the guy left her he never really loved her. Love isn't a passive feeling.

I agree, too often is love mistakenly called an emotion.

IMO romantic love is, ideally, composed of erotic love, emotional love, and curious love. The third being that combination of things that create an indescribable attraction to someone. All of these can exist independently, but a stable relationship incorporates all three.

Of course, all three are composed a countless other traits, almost none of which can be quantified.

As such, my little analysis has not simplified anything.

I wrote a story about this once. It was ace. Anyway, I suppose that if the curious and emotional factors were well grounded in your relationship it could easily continue and possibly even become stronger, being that erotic love is, IMO, the weakest of the components present in a strong relationship.

I might.

But I am in Utah so that doesn't mean I have to leave her.

I think only someone who is actually in this relationship could answer the question, and if a person is really in love with someone as the description goes, don't you think it's a given that they'd stay with the person? If they didn't stay with the person, than the initial truths aren't true.

what if you somehow met someone else after the accident who is perfect in every way, including looks? meh, who am i kidding? theres too much guilt if you leave her.

Nowhere in that description were the words "fat" or "gained weight" mentioned, so I don't see what the problem is.

It should also be noted that the Gamefaqs forums are a horrible, horrible place. Don't go there.

And hey, now at least you can rest a little more assured that there's no competition.

Depends on how old you both are... If you are both still young, it probably wouldnt work. However, if she still, for the most part, functions mentally and is still HER, then I see no reason why you can't still be together.

That's one of those ironic situations where the unharmed person would later be cheated on (somehow) by the mutilated spouse.

Are you referring to a very ancient post? I'm surprised anyone would remember that to say the least.

As for GameFAQs, yes it is a horrible place, but it is rather entertaining what some people say at times. Anyhow, I'm actually proud of you guys so far base on the responses.

Really? It was the first thing that popped into my head when I saw the thread title.

Anyway, it's difficult for me to imagine, without actually being in a situation like that, what I would do. I honestly can't say I'm optimistic about how things would turn out.

i'd leave her, but i'd feel guilty about it.

Especially when i start boning her emotional fragile sister.
She's all upset cos a close family member recently had an accident. Ho hum.

Maybe she has a hot mom too...

I'm sure i was going somewhere with this...:colbert:

unless we were 45 yrs old, and my beautiful hair had all fallen out and i was old ugly and smelly, then i'd stay with her, cos I wouldnt find anything else.

If i was 20-30 tho... zoom!

I would *like* to say that I would stay with her. I would like to think that I would not be so cheap or shallow to leave her when she needed me most. I really don't know.

For some reason, though, I think that those Gamefags losers probably get laid far more often than I.

I think one needs to actually experience this before he or she could come to a conclusion.

I know of a few couples that went through such scenarios, and they're still together after all these years :P

Ah, yes, GameFAQs... As I think we all should know by now, a place full of people who are shining examples of maturity and human virtue.

At any rate, as that scenario mentioned, it seemed to only cover appearance anyway. So for someone who, according to rumors, HAS no physical body, I'd let you take a guess. :p

Yeah, if it was the case that they were getting laid more than you... Then we'd have to know how you managed to accomplish what you do and all, breaking the laws of reality and such.
