Xbox Live Question
2008-01-12, 6:18 PM #1
So, I just got the gold account. I got it mostly set up.

I have a question though. If I had a friend that came over and we wanted to play a game, could he use his gamertag/stuff that's on his xbox? I know he won't be able to access saved games and such. But just for gamerscore purposes/adding friends/etc.

I saw an option to recover a gamertag. But I'm not exactly sure if that's what I'm looking for.

How would I go about doing this?

i know on the original xbox gamertags could be copied to a memory unit

You can for the 360 too. That's how mine is setup, and it's the best way.

You have the right idea, he recovers his gamertag on your 360, temporarily moving it there. When he goes home, he recovers it on his 360, thus moving it back.

He can either move his gamertag with a memory card, or use the recover gamertag option. Recover gamertag basically just makes your gamertag active on that specific console. When your friend goes back home he'll need to recover it again on his own.

my roommate has his live account on a memory card so he can go back and forth between his 360 and mine. works pretty well...

I recover my account at my friends often. You just sign in with your email/password and it will download your profile to their XBox.. even when I play COD4 it downloads all my custom slots and saved games.

One thing, though. I don't know if it's been fixed yet, but during all the Live problems the account recovery service was completely down. I tried to recover mine numerous times and was never able to. I even tried a few days ago at a friend's house and it still wasn't working. I guess that's one situation where having a memory card would be beneficial. It's hard to justify $30 for 64 MB or $50 for 512 MB, though.

For some people. For me it was a nice way to quickly take save games and my profile with me, without lugging around my harddrive.

I was the only one of my friends to ever buy a memory card for my Xbox, and it proved hugely beneficial for everyone. So far it's the same way for the 360, and it's proven it's usefulness a few times so far.

For the xbox I always just used a flash drive. I really miss that about the 360.

Yeah during all XBL problems it was not working.. It seems to be ok now I did it yesterday and today.

Alright, thanks for the help on that guys. I think for now I'll save my money on a memory card and just recover each time :P Another question that brings up is, when he goes back to his house, does he have to delete the current profile to recover it? Or when you recover it again, does it just overwrite the old gamerscore stuff?

NEW QUESTION: I've noticed that there's IM capabilities while playing games. I'm curious about that. Do you get messages that pop up at the lower-bottom of the screen or something, when someone sends you one? I wouldn't want to use the on-screen keyboard each time, is it possible to get a wireless keyboard for messaging? Can I do a voice-chat (in windows live, you call someone) instead?

I know on the first xbox you could send voice messages.

Really tedious, but made for some interesting stuff. Listening to some kid go off on you about how you cheat, or how you suck, etc etc over the course of 4 or 5 messages was lullerbutter

Well I know I can send voice messages to other people on XBL, my question is, can I start a voice chat with someone on Windows Live messenger?

Only for pictures, videos, music, etc. You can't use them for anything related to profiles, gamesaves, live content, etc.

No. It's limited to text.

There's a keypad that connects to the bottom of the controller that was released a few months ago. I've only laid eyes on it a few times, it's alright. You can also just connect a normal USB keyboard and achieve the same effect.

So it just plugs in like the headset does?

360 question: is it possible to use a USB cable to connect your 360 to your computer like a regular portable hard drive? I had a friend tell me you could, but I haven't had the chance to test it yet.

I'm interested because that'd be a lot faster than burning multiple CD-RWs, and easier than taking my MP3 player and mini-usb cable with me everywhere I take my 360.
I had a blog. It sucked.

I believe you can do it over your network. Google that.

You can't copy directly from the PC to the 360, however the 360 can play any music (and most video formats) on the PC via network share.

Also, as far as chatting, you can attach just about any USB keyboard you can find.

Yeah, this includes wireless keyboards (as long as they have a USB dongle, not bluetooth).

Yes. The chatpad even comes with another headset since it completely dominates the connector it uses.

Microsoft will tell you to use Media Center or Windows Media Player or the Zune Software. There's a far, far, FAR less bloated way to do it however, that they apparently phased out for some ridiculous reason. Go search for Windows Media Connect. It's a tiny program that will run at startup and stay in the background detecting other computers or 360s on the network, and displaying them in a list. Everything is not allowed to connect to your computer by default. Find your 360, allow it to connect, select the folders to share, and all of your content will steam over the network. It works for videos, it works for music, it works for pictures, and it doesn't interfere with anything else.

This is nice for me, because I use iTunes, and I have zero wish to install the freaking Zune Software and maintain two libraries just so I can stream my music.

If you can't find WMC, PM me and I'll email it to you. Massassi is being a tard and not uploading it because the max filesize for a zip is 100kb (wtf?).

I know this is a little late, but thank you very much for posting this. I have been trying all day to get this stupid *** Windows Media Center crap to work, and it keeps giving me all of these errors and such. Not to mention they couldn't have just made it easy with one installer, but instead you have to install one thing before you install something else, in which you have to get an update to the newest thing you just downloaded. However, before you can do any of this it forces you to sit through every single software update that's connected to Microsoft on your system. It's just ridiculous all the things they put you through when you only want to download one damn piece of software. Windows Media Connect seems like it's going to work just fine. Thanks again :)
