[Art] Best way to avoid "square edges" with tiles?

I'm trying to make some tiles for my friend's game so he can pump out a tech demo this weekend and I can't seem to get a grass tile with no square edges...for some reason, despite my best efforts, it doesn't tile correctly. Any help? I'm just looking for tips on how to do it overall, as I've got a lot more work to do and some **** may need to be worked out to the same effect.

Added: using Photoshop CS2.

Heh, this brings me back to the old days of editing JK.

I suggest you use the beautiful grass texture from level 3. :P

Hah, well I would but I don't want the wrath of LucasArts to descend upon my friends. All this **** has to be original, and it's a 2d RPG so it shouldn't be too difficult once I figure this all out.

The basic process for making things tile is pretty easy:

1. Get picture (or drawing, or whatever) that you want to make into a tile. For example I'll use this picture of grass that I already had on my hard drive:

2. shift it across and down by half its size so that the tile seams are in the middle of the picture

3. Clone stamp until the seams are gone

4. Shift across and down again, should tile decently now.

Haha as if Gold ever got to the stage where he needed textures.

The patch tool and heal brush are often better than the clone tool for this.

The paintbrush is even better still.

I haven't used CS3 yet. Barely getting used to CS2. How is it?

I have CS3 on my laptop. Happy day for me I guess. There are new tools added but I'm not a hardcore enough Photoshop user to really find use for them.

The Gimp has a make seemless filter. Not sure, if it's any good, though.
