In fairness to Microsoft and my problems with xbox live, I'm going to now post the problems we just ran into with the stupid wii.

My step-son has a wii here, and he has a wii at his "real" dad's house. He just got a few new games for Christmas, and he wants to continue where he left off when he goes for a 3-day stay at his dad's house. So he has me order him an SD card from newegg, which arrived today (hurray free shipping and no tax for WA state).

Anyway, he called me because he was having problems copying SAVE GAME data from two of the games:

Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games
Sonic Riders Zero Gravity

I tried it, got a "This file cannot be copied" error, and so I went online, and nintendo's "support" website says to update the console before trying to copy files to the sd card. So I used the system update thing to get the latest software, and it still doesn't work. It works on every other game, just not those two.

Turns out, Sega & Nintendo have this thing going on where they intentionally prevent you from copying your savegame data for some stupid reason. They won't talk about it, there's no official word anywhere. So now, if he wants to play these games elsewhere, he has to start over. Totally stupid. Moronic.

Nintendo and Sega, you suck just as bad as Microsoft.

Ironically the only reason to do this is to inhibit homebrew, which nintendo said it was going to be a big supporter of.

Uh, via the Internet Channel maybe.

Regardless, there's a bunch of 360 games that also do this. It's more of a game developer choice than the system issue.

I had this same problem with a few games on gamecube. It's really stupid.

Really? Guess I haven't run into any yet.

Then again I don't do a whole lot of game save copying to my memory card.

Which games? Any game released before Q4 2007 had to support both the hard drive and memory units or else Microsoft would not sign their disc. Period.

He knows and recognizes that--he's complaining about nintendo and sega because they're the developers :p

How utterly bizarre and random.
2008-01-18, 9:33 PM #13
Yeah, I remember this with Gamecube as well. There were a couple of saves that it wouldn't let me transfer to a larger memory card...:(

Why in the name of hell would anyone do that?

I emailed sega and their "tech support" moron said that it was probably my SD card, which is total crap and a complete lie, because nobody can save these games, no matter their SD cards. My stepson was pissed because he "wasted" his money on the SD card, I told him he should be pissed at SEGA and NINTENDO because they are the morons that don't let you copy your supid savegames.

This is why you can't copy saves. Yay encryption.

They really said this? Wow, they have a poor way of showing it.
Sorry for the lousy German

Well it shouldn't matter if its encrypted, I should still be able to copy it. Like I said, every other game works, it's just those stupid sega ones that don't.

I don't see how a few specific games not allowing save transferring would inhibit homebrew

Originally Nintendo promised that you would be able to download homebrew/indie games off of Wii Store. Turns out that it's only an indie game if it's made by Square-Enix, though.

Save-game hacks are how a lot of systems get cracked, then homebrew starts. There's often big holes in the save-game system which allow you to run unsigned code on a system.

Miyamoto-world more like Iwataland.

Guy likes coins more than Wario.

The official excuse for not allowing Wii homebrew is that they made Flash available, and Flash is - after all - enough for any game. The PS3 is roughly on par, because although you can run Linux, the firmware hypervisor prohibits access to the graphics card. Considering the fact that the Wii and the PS3 both make extreme use of opensource software I think it's hilarious how the Xbox 360 is the most open of the big three.

No. It didn't make sense because it wasn't true. There's like, 5 developers already working on different WiiWare games.

5 developers--show me them then? Also, are they homebrew developers?

I'm thinking anyone should be able to publish any game through the VC, as supporting homebrew. Not a few lesser-known dev companies get to push ****ty titles through it.
