the phenoms are out and i was wondering what you guys thought of them. i know they don't really compare to intel's lot but...
anyone have one yet?

on a side note, ati's newest has dual 55nm processors on them. it's crossfire on one card and ait/amd can do 55nm now.

nVidia has the 9800GX2 coming out, so unfortunately ATI's still boned.

Heard the phenoms aren't great, but I haven't heard any live testimonials.

The Phenoms fail. There was a huge bug in the processors upon initial release, which I believe they are still working to fix. In addition, their performance still doesn't hold up to Intel.

Which happens to be two 8800GTS bolted together. Honestly, Nvidia's 9xxx series is turning out to be *minor* G80 refreshes. If anything interesting come for them, this won't be it.

On the other hand, if ATI can get the R700 out in time, it could very well be back in the running, depending on what Nvidia has been doing with it's time. (It's had over a year. If it hasn't been working on something other than some lame g80 tweaks, it's been most unwise. I doubt that Nvidia had been unwise.) All in all I think this next generation of cards (not the fake 9xxx/3xxx "generation") will be very interesting.

Their performance technically SHOULD hold up, and be at a slightly lower price point, but that's part of the bug. Once they get it fixed it's should be a more interesting ballgame.

Remember the 7800 GX2? I think this is going to be the same deal personally...pointless r/f.

The likelihood of a race condition in TLB logic is probably one of the main reasons Intel hasn't made a chip with a shared L3 cache yet. It's hard to do and the performance benefits are questionable, especially since more applications will make relatively even use of multiple processors going forward.

I think AMD's probably pretty desperate to fire something out there that's worth people's time right now. Unfortunately, Intel was never really dethroned as the king, and with Core Duo pretty much secured its position fairly firmly once again.

Hopefully it turns out for the best for us, whatever that route may be.
