EA Defends Mass Effect

Remember the ******* that went on and on about how Mass Effect was a sex simulator? He or the story, or both, made it to Fox News at some point, where it was, once again, blown out of proportion.

EA sent the producers of the segment a letter, standing up for and defending Mass Effect, and requesting an apology.

It's simple, it's to the point, and I actually just gained a smidgen of respect for EA. Wonder what Fox will do.

Good. It's about time some of the big guys took Fox News' lies and shoved them straight back down their throat.

How many viewers will doing something about it gain them? If too few, they won't do anything, if enough, they will do something. Who knows.

Unless EA sues Fox, absolutely nothing. Redactions are boring and take away time from wooshing sound effects and Family Guy DVD ads. Big Media will always latch on to any opportunity to criticize games... because games are their main competitor. Television and video games use the same display device, you can only watch one at a time, and it's cutting into their advertising revenue.

Why do you think video games were really blamed for Columbine? Irresponsible parents tried to shift the blame onto someone else. Everybody thought the parents were full of ****, but the media companies didn't suggest so much as exclaim that the parents were correct. Fox, especially, puts a lot of inflammatory and self-serving garbage on their network and when it's proven wrong they never ever ever post a redaction. Even when it does come to a slander or libel suit they usually settle instead of putting it on the air, because they don't want their feebleminded viewers to realize that Fox News is a tabloid show.

To be fair, that sums up the mass media as a whole, not just Fox.

Thats what happens when such a document is written by someone not in the legal department.
And when the moment is right, I'm gonna fly a kite.

No, it doesn't. Fox is incalculably worse than absolutely every other network in existence.

Well, I'm not referring to who's worse. I'm referring to the general idea that if you **** up (as a media company), it's not likely you are going to let the issue go public easily with the risk of losing viewers.
2008-01-23, 8:20 PM #11
The problem is, the viewers who watch that crap are worse than Fox News its self.

I would also have accepted a legal threat.

How were they claiming that Mass Effect is a sex simulator? What do you do in the game that they object to?

The issue is that they are reporting on a story before they actually know the story.

Quite a lot of that these days.

Who cares?

The game didn't get banned. It's still an okay game. When people make a big deal out of sensationalist stories, DUN DUN, they're what is making it a big deal.

Well, of course it didn't get banned. The problem is that spreading lies about it will brainwash public into giving some fruitloop the support they need to have it banned.

The only reason we should care is the number of people who see stories like that and assume that it's true.
My mom used to constantly send me articles that talked about how evil video games were until I was able to convince her that the majority of it just wasn't true.
Alot of people see this stuff and believe it so it is up to those (us) who know the truth to correct them.

Let's just say that it's up to you to believe what you want. People blind themselves to things all the time in order to support their views. It's human nature.

These tv stations, weirdly, have the same outlook and I can't blame them. There's a reason I don't pay for Cable TV.

Pretty much what was expected: no apology, just an invite on their show where they can drag the game through the mud some more and brush off EA on air.

Wacko Jacko said Mass Effect and it's sex scene is ok.
