So what, a group of anonymous hackers are trying to take down the Church of Scientology? Are they serious? Do they have any chance of succeeding?

No

It wouldn't be the first time anonymous has taken down an organization.

But Scientology is far too big to be able to do anything about.

No no no. The point is to gain awareness of how much of a retarded cult Scientology is. They're slowly gaining media attention. Good place timing too, with the Panorama (BBC) video out.

Must Anonymous and their endeavors be discussed here?

Maybe Scientology is a scam to get your money.

This is probably the biggest pile of don't care I've ever seen.

I'll be happy when this retarded anonymous fad goes away.

Lulz indeed. The chans are going nuts with this.

Maybe I'm just being overly optimistic but kind of everyone already knows Scientology is retarded.

Stupid people are going to do stupid stuff no matter how much you tell them they're stupid.

The biggest thing anon has taken down is Hal Turner, who was a half-wit schlock jock who probably would have collapsed on his own. Other than that, the best they can do is trick people into giving up their myspace passwords and spamming message boards until they get bored. Hell, 4chan doesn't even do raids anymore, so that just leaves the rest of the chans (population: 15).

WOOHOO, this is the internet war that i have been waiting for, lots of people have wanted ebaums to try this, but they are wimps who use phrases like "yiddish cup" in threatening emails, so they would probably cave quickly against scientology, while the Chans and anonymous are much better, simply due to the fact that they have some very skilled hackers, and that they can maintain anonymity.

so, as has been said, whoever looses, we win.

also, even though they have said they are pretty much using the same tactics scientology uses, I think that it is a good thing as scientology will finally face something that is not a single group or person, and some of their organisations are already in financial trouble, as a number of their "orgs" in australia are falling into disrepair and their efforts are pretty much being countered with the people of the clambake forums "enturbulating" where ever they try to covertly recruit.

Here's the thing. I'm glad that Anon are getting media attention.

This, however, exposes Scientology more to the public...for better or worse. Some people will look into how many deaths were scientology related (that could have been prevented).

But my experiences with people lead me to believe there's other people who are not so...educated on the matter that they'll be prey for the church. This could very well lead to a huge recruitment opportunity, or a huge demise. One of the two.

Operation Clambake has it right though, this is a definite opportunity for Scientology to play the "omg religiour perse-cution!!!!!11 HAX!!!"

have you ever been to 4chan? They're not secret hackers on steroids dedicated to anonymity, they're a bunch of dudes who stay up too late at night making fun of whatever celebrity has died recently and looking at pictures of dickgirls. Only maybe one out of a hundred people on /b/ are knowledgeable and actually dedicated in any way to the "cause," the rest are camwhores, wannabe camwhores, guys looking for porn, people lost from Deviantart, people lost from Fanfiction, people lost from Gaiaonline and high school boys who see 4chan as their personal fight club.

Why? So that when your real life friends ask you you can say you're a part of anonymous and be joe-cool instead of joe-loser?

It's just another stupid fad that became mainstream and will eventually die a slow horrible death.

The thing though is that the knowledgeable are occasionally able to corral the morons into doing something en masse, with sometimes amusing results

Sweet...

Real quick though, for discussions sake, do you guys think this could contribute to the breakdown of net neutrality? I feel like all it would take would be for somebody who doesn't understand what's going on here to go on a war path, rally a bunch of soccer moms and we see the ability to remain anonymous online disappear.

Jesus, I posted "I was here." in a comment around 12 hours ago, and after going through 40 pages I still can't find it!!

That ability has been diminishing greatly as of late.

How is this happening? I'd just google it but I'm honestly not sure where to look for that sort of info. I'm assuming that the government has already made moves to restrict anonymity? Perhaps something related to the patriot act or some such nonsense?

I need educating!

Not if you take the proper measures. If you wanna remain invisible, find a good cgi and http proxy, use them in conjunction. Granted, it'll be slow, but it's worth it.
