Ever experienced a "wiki binge"?
2008-01-24, 9:16 PM #1
You know, those moments where you would go on wikipedia.org or any other such wiki and find yourself clicking on link after link, absorbing loads of information about anything from something useful (like biology) or something trivial (like the history of an anime show), only to discover that 2 or so hours have past since you started?

Hehe, I've had some days when that happens to me, usually as a result of looking at one article in particular and just finding myself branching off from one topic to another, almost like having one of those "chain thoughts" you would have when you're monologuing to yourself. Just curious if anyone else does this as well or maybe I'm just a geek with too much time to kill :P

It happens to me quite often.

Afterwards, I look at the page I started from and the one I ended up at, and it's amazing how far off track I can get just by following links.

Oh man, yes. I have that reaction to any website that just allows you to click link after link after link. I do the same on myspace and bmezine.com.

this.... Sometimes after I realize that I've gotten off track, I would also realize that I had forgotten what I originally went on for. :psyduck:

Yeah, this should be a public poll so we can see who the soulless ones are.

It happens nearly every time I use it, and for far longer than just 2 hours. I'll end up with a whole tab window of Wiki. When I KNOW I have to leave or can't stay awake any longer, I'll use the "bookmark all tabs." There's always at least 50 in that bookmark folder.

Yeah the other day I had to look up something about Hong Kong and somehow got all the way to "Solar Flares"; it was something like:

Hong Kong -> List of Countries by Population Density -> Canada -> Canadian Culture -> Fictional Canadians -> Rodney McKay -> Astrophysics -> Star -> Sun -> Solar Flare

Read every single article there too.

There's a reason I try not to go to wikipedia, or any other wiki for that matter. Every time I do, I get sucked in for much longer than I had time for... and it's usually when I'm trying to get some work done.

I like to do wikiraces with my friends via MSN.

Once I bet my friend that I could get from Pussy to Bulgaria in less clicks than him. I was pretty surprised at the result. Pussy->German Language->Bulgaria.

I advice against visiting. If you think I'm a douche... well atleast I'm not some fat guy taking pictures of his DIY castration in his bathroom and then posting it everywhere.

Oh cripes. Happens to me nearly on a daylie basis. Especially as of late, work is so slow I'm left staring at a computer screen without doing anything.

I've been enjoying wikipedia and wowwiki's lore section.

I get lost in Goonfleet's wiki (Eve players unite!) and in Wikipedia a LOT. Especially if I'm looking up something to use on my server, and there's other software mentioned. "Ooh, list of SMTP servers? Woh, this one looks nice! What, written in D? What the hell is D? Woh, this language is whack!" etc...
2008-01-25, 5:54 AM #27
"Eve players unite" more like "Eve players spend 15 hours a day mining heavy water only stopping once a month to log in their cyno alt and change skills" am I right?

But links people send you don't always tell you what you're going to be seeing.

It's me, I'm the goon that gets lost in Goonfleet's wiki. I spend so much time on that thing that I can recite you an optimal fitting for nearly every capital ship, every battleship, and recite you the entire Goonfleet history. I actually get pissed when an article doesn't nearly have enough information, this mostly happens only with history articles about EVE.

I am a nerd :awesomelon:

Well I thought Wikipedia had an article on "wikipedia addiction" and something else came up as 100% relevant.
