What is your job?
2008-01-25, 2:27 PM #1
Part-time, full-time, stuff your applying for... If you're just a student or you're unemployed, what (reasonable, not fantasy) job are you hoping to have?

I work part time as a QA (quality assurance) tester for a company in Hunt Valley called Absolute Quality. Basically I test a bunch of cellphone games, and some cellphone applications, though I did get to test a PS2 game once and trained for some PC stuff.

I'm also trying to apply for an internship at Day 1 Studios, Breakaway Games, or Bethesda Softworks -- art, design, writing, testing...whatever they'll hire me for. I'm hoping to shift from that into actual job positions from there... we'll see.

Nice your job sounds fun!

Currently I'm developer/programmer for YoungHamilton llc. We build websites for people, and run our own website that is a community for helping out professionals in the mortgage business.

What's that?

Oh and Zan: It's definitely a good part-time job, but the work is irregular... I'm doing this for the experience, not the paychecks.

Ah, ok. Still, that's pretty vague though. What are your general duties? I've always been curious if they still go around to schools with the D.A.R.E. stuff, for example.

I'm a "venues assistant" at the Liverpool Guild of Students. Which tends to mean bartender, but I'm also available to help out with other aspects of the place if I'm needed. Runs the entire gamut from being incredibly fun to the most soul-sapping part of my life. Sometimes in a single night :P

I'm applying for a 12-month or 16-month internship at several software companies as either a software developer, project manager, or if worse comes to worse, QA/data analyst. Hopefully I will get to work at a mid-sized company, but it looks like it will be far more likely that I will end up working at a larger company such as IBM.

I'm also looking for a part-time job so I can live comfortably until May without just piling up a credit card debt. I have a job at a supermarket (I haven't work there since Nov, but the boss will let me work whenever I please if I need to), but I'm looking for a job paying more than 10$.

I work in IT for a local company. In April I'll have been here six years. I was 16 when I started.

I'm also a full time CS student.

We have a DARE officer and a school resource officer. I'm a patrolman...think of anything you'd ever call the cops for, and there you go. ;) Add in traffic enforcement, foot patrol on Main Street, door checks, attempting to resolve situations (that took years to deteriorate) in a matter of minutes..yeah. :P

In return you can give me a hefty paycheck.

In addition to being a poor student, I'm a teacher's assistant for a Computer Science class which is geared towards teaching business students Microsoft Office...primarily Excel. I get to teach my own lab...which basically means I get to bombard freshmen and sophomore students with xkcd comics. They rarely laugh. >_> (...probably because they're business students.)

I am a forecast analyst - it's my job to forecast how much volume we are going to recieve then calculate how many staff we need to process the volumes on a day-to-day basis. Basically the company recruits and rosters staff based on my recommendation.

My job is several gigs of Excel spreadsheets.

IT Director for a little company called Optical Dynamics. We design and manufacture equipment to cast ophthalmic lenses directly to Rx and apply various coatings (scratch resistance, anti-reflectance, etc). 2 years last October.

My roles:

Editor
I am handed a pile of tapes and an outline from the director, the client, or whoever has ordered the package. I capture, edit, and mass produce the final product. I spend about an hour per every 5 minutes of footage. I also design DVD menus. I usually work on video photo albums (slide shows), music videos, weddings, commercials, and training.

Production Manager/Director
I manage the camera placement, shot compositions, and everything it takes to achieve the above. I usually oversee a team of 2-5 camera operators, and then operate a camera myself.

Representative
I've represented at business conferences, trade shows, and marketing presentations, despite hating each and every moment of it. I dislike selling things.

I also end up fixing everything from cameras to computers, I'm the unofficial tech guy for anyone remotely associated with the company, and I've had to completely run the show on countless occasions.

I don't really like my job, though.

Right now, I'm a full time Sprint/Nextel customer care rep. That means whenever you dial 1-800-639-6111 you may end up talking to me, or hundreds of other outsourced call center agents.

On the side I do a lot of web programming for local businesses, have built some basic CRM Software for a local business... Haven't done much with my programming diploma to be honest, I felt a little burned out after I graduated.

Have applied at several local programming firms, including one that works on M$ Active Directory primarily, one that is a small game studio, and one that does the programming work for digital parking meters!

edit: oh and I've been working with local professional wrestling promotions with their media production as well as learning to wrestle.
