Eric Bana - The new James Bond?

Certainly an interesting choice. Personally, if they wanted an Australian for the role Hugh Jackman would have been a better choice as he has way more class than Bana.

I like Eric Bana, but Hollywood seems to be continually going to amazing lengths to miscast him.

Chopper was awesome.

Chopper wasn't Hollywood.

He still seems like a fairly decent and flexible actor, I expect he might be able to pull off a good performance as Bond... i'll have to wait and see... never expected it from him, he hasn't shown a very suave side yet.

Isn't Eric Bana supposed to be more of a comedian in Australia?

My vote would be for Christian Bale or Jude Law.

If anyone, I think it should be Brad Pitt. He's not too young, he looks vaguely 'super-spyish', and he's a good enough actor to do it.

Plus, do you have any idea how much it would sell if teenage girls across america saw that he was the new James Bond?

Oh wait, it has to be british. Hmm, never mind. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/redface.gif]

For that one first scene in Goldeneye, Brosnan was the perfect Bond....you know the scene, where he just dropped in the bathroom, and he rounding the corner with PPK in hand? Yeah. Perfect.

Yes. Yes you are.

Though whoever said Dalton was worse than Moore is clearly on some kind of hallucinagenic drug. Moore's Bond is pretty much a bad slapstick comedian inexplicably running around with a gun. I mean sure, Bond films are pretty darn silly, but Moore was just taking the piss.

Moore wasn't bad at first, he was just too old in the last two that he did. Plus, Moonraker was just a stupid movie

James Bond is British, not Australian for crying out loud... ok so Pierce Brosnan was Irish, but hey that's still the UK - why would you have an Aussie working for MI6? Ewan would have been an okay choice since he's Scottish, but I don't think he's got the right style for it...

Oh and this:

<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">"Eric is the guy they want but he has a reputation for being demanding. They want to modernise Bond and turn him into a youthful, suave and modern hero to compete with the likes of Spiderman and Keanu (Reeves) in the Matrix,"</font>
[/b]

So Bond will probably be able to dodge bullets and leap off buildings now - this is worrying - they also said they want to go back to his 'young life' and explore that - for crying out loud, the whole charm of it is that Bond doesn't age!

Grrrrarrrgh!

True, i want ewan mcgregor, there hasnt been a scottish bond since connery, and although its obvious, Lazenby sucked, i mean the opening scene of his first movie he got beat up and the girl drove off in his car, then he got up and said 'This never happened to the other guy'.

I don't like what I seen of Bana that much. He seems to lack in charisma, which is something you desperately need to play Bond well.

Yeah, it's not like Die Another Day wasn't getting all sorts of amazing reviews. Nor did it make any money in box office.

Bana, Bloom, and Pitt have been mentioned for playing Bond and Sean Bean has already been in a Bond movie. Since I just barely watched Troy, I'm a little freaked out at this coincedence.

Is this supposed to be sarcastic or not (ie. do you mean it got bad reviews and made no money, or got good reviews and made lots of money)? Because it's half wrong either way. Die Another Day got generally bad reviews (as it should because it was a crap film) but still made $160,933,087 in the USA alone (according to imdb.com) which is not exactly considered a bad box office take...

I think Pierce Brosnan still be James Bond in several more movies. The thing I don't like about most movies nowadays is that they are getting too much into using CG and doing impossible stuff.
I bet the CG people can't make tanker scenes half as good as the ones Derek Meddings did for "The Spy Who Loved Me".

As far as who I think should be the next James Bond, I have no idea.

The whole problem lies in trying to 'modernise' Bond.

The more they try to 'modernise' it, the more it just becomes a crap action film. Bond can't shoot webs from his hands or throw cars in the air or dodge bullets or use lightsabres. Trying to make Bond more like other action films really doesn't work because they don't have a whole lot to work with. He's just a bloke. They need to go back and take a long look at Flemming's books again.

Dalton is definitely the most Bond-like in terms of the books, but I do think Moore made for good films. You're exaggurating a little at just how 'slapstick' he was, but it was refreshing to have a lighthearted action film. Bond has never really been about drama or raw emotion or 'depth' in particular. There's more than enough 'manly' action films where the hero's girlfriend is captured and he has to kill guys to save the one he loves etc. etc. It's nice to have an action-comedy, with Moore making some sort of semi-witty and amusing comment after killing a guy. Trying to make Bond 'emotional' isn't a good idea; Dalton did a pretty good job of it, but Brosnan really didn't.

My heirarchy goes:
Connery > Moore > Dalton > Brosnan > Lazenby

Moore was just way too pompous. You're supposed to cheer on the hero, not want to see them impaled on a spike everytime they speak. I didn't mind Dalton, but Brosnan has much more presence.

All of them eat Connery's dust though.

Brosnan is my favorite... i know i will be killed for this, but connery is a painfully close second! brosnan was just the best incarnation of the bond character. like in goldeneye and (at least i think) die another day. *gets a large sheild*

Connery was the frigging man. He didn't take crap from no one. That woman talking back? He ***** slapped that hoe and then slept with her.

And CookedHaggis, my apologies, I thought Die Another Day was getting good reviews. Everyone I know who saw it loved it. Anything over $100 million is considered a blockbuster movie in the USA. So for Bond to hit $160 million (I think thats one of, if not the, highest ever) then it's a blockbuster movie.

If Orlando Bloom is chosen as Bond, I will never watch another Bond film again. I can not stand that guy.

I liked Bloom in LOTR, but he sucked in Pirates of the Caribean....which is amazing since everything else in it was wonderful. He just lacks screen presence. But, hey, flavour of the month.

RE: reviews of the last Bond movie, here's some data:

Die Another Day - 58%, 6.1 / 10

...which is about the same as the two before it. Goooo mediocrity.

I think it can be taken on a general consensus that Connery was clearly the daddy of all bonds. Personally I like Dalton's lack of cheeriness, but I'm too fond of Moore to seperate the pair, due to watching the Saint a lot, where he was brilliant. Brosnan was brilliant in Goldeneye, but his movies just went slowly downhill... too fanciful and too reliant on the gadgets (merchandising anyone?). Lazenby clearly sucked dead bunnies. Every day.

Connery > Brosnan in Goldeneye > Moore/Dalton > Brosnan in everything else >>> Olives dipped in fat man sweat >>>>>>>> Lazenby

Ralph Feinnes or Christian Bale would make decent Bonds - I don't know about Ewan McGreggor - cool as he is, I think he's cool in the wrong way.
