tell me just how a government issued number that is able to be used for identity theft is anyhting but a national ID number, even if it isnt intended to be one.

A number, issued by the government, that is used nationaly, that is now pretty much used for identification, i cannot see how you can deny the fact that, like it or not, whether intended or not, it is now pretty much a defacto national ID number.

The fact that anything outside the tax system requires a social security number shows that some people treat it as a national ID number.

..but its a unique number given to every citizen....I don't see why it wouldn't be very convenient to use as a form of ID..
