Yeah, hunting for items in the like, six ribbon segments is so much worse than hunting for items in dozens of nested menubar items...

Problem is that a lot of people have been trained in being able to find **** in "dozens of menu items." I mean eventually, people will figure out where stuff is and whatnot. But I'm arguing from the point of view that things really didn't need to be changed so drastically. It's been my experience that people hate change with a passion. The ribbon design in Office 2007 was quite the UI change. People used to one UI layout for years are going to expect the same UI layout still. All of a sudden this ribbon layout comes and changes the UI quite a bit.
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

Yet all the people I know who've come to use the ribbon have been all "wow, this is so much easier now".

The fact that it only takes a few hours to get used to the ribbon is pretty good, you can train your entire staff in less than a day. That's peanuts compared to the usual length and cost of a training course.

Looks like I can't even use the Vista upgrade, so it will cost me 2x to go to vista. Plus I'm worried that my computer will be too slow to run vista + the games I run. I have:

P4 3.2ghz
2gb ram
geforce 5900

Why can't you use the Vista upgrade? The only catch with it is that you have to have XP installed already. You can still do a fresh install, you just need something installed to prove that you have it. A lot of people hate this but let's face it, everyone used to exploit the upgrade disks.

Also you may be right that it might be too slow. The 5900 isn't that great and Vista drivers are still not very good.

Thanks nVidia :downs:

I have never owned XP. I have a legit version of 95, 98, and 2k, none of which are valid upgrades to vista home premium. Oh well. Now back to the gfx card issue, it may be time to buy a new card, but I'll have to get a used one since nobody sells a decent agp card anymore. Blah, maybe cheaper just to buy a new computer, eh?

dont do it! they're all filled with electronics that are all part of an evil corporate agenda to mail you things and wont let you save games!!1! And the huge hard drives can mean only one thing! they're filling all OSes with bloat!

Good point.

Buy Vista Home Prem upgrade, install Vista Home Basic using that disc. (If you don't enter a product key it asks you what version you have and lets it go for 30 days. All the Vista discs have the same data.) Then run the installer from inside Home Basic and upgrade to Home Premium. Use your valid key and rock out.

Buy the Vista Home Premium upgrade. Install Windows, don't enter product key and choose Home Basic. Then you can upgrade to Home Premium. Saves you from having to drop the cash on the full Premium or Home Basic.

Runs Q4 at decent speeds, dx10, roughly comparable to a 6800 Ultra I'd say.

Got a similar nvidia one? My main operating system is linux and I've heard nothing but terrible stuff about the ati linux drivers (whereas the nvidia ones work perfectly for me).

No DX10, not as fast, but it's nvidia.

AGP support from Ati isn't very good from my experience. I bought that card DJ suggested last Christmas but the damn card wouldn't work when I installed the drivers. My motherboard is legacy anyway so I'll have to wait until I got the bucks to buy a whole new rig. I personally suggest you pass on AGP and just save up for a PCI-Express supported motherboard.

Which means I need a new motherboard, cpu, ram, and gfx card at that point. I'm going to try to buy a decent used agp card off craigslist or something.

Not necessarily, depending on what you have right now. You'll need a new motherboard, maybe a new CPU, you can probably pass on new RAM, but yes you will need a new GFX card. Looking at 300 total probably.

Sorry, I meant to post this earlier but it was a very busy week. You should be happy that you weren't a paying customer. Freeloaders like you were the ones that caused the problem. Stupid late adopters.

Of course you're smart enough to read some sarcasm into the above comments but it is also true. It was an extremely successful holiday season for Live and even though it fouled the system up for a short time, the spike will undoubtedly lead to a vastly improved infrastructure.

I'm in the same boat as you but after two failed attempts at replacing my graphics card last Christmas, I have no choice but to shell out for a new CPU, motherboard, gfx card, etc etc.

Well, if all the free trial users had the same experience I had, they will just let the subscription lapse and never pay another dime. They wouldn't extend my free trial so I could even play an online game, so now I have to pay for the trial. I guess I got a free game out of it (but it sucks and I deleted it after I played through 2 levels).

I think most people are rational enough to understand that the problem was due to the unanticipated but fortunately successful holiday season. All of us who have been long time subscribers were like, "this is weird, what's wrong with my setup" because the issue was completely foreign to us. Live has performed near flawlessly for years and has an excellent reputation.

I haven't tried the compensation game yet but it didn't get me excited when I saw the title.

Joining the Vista works fine bandwagon.

My older Nvidia drivers crashed occasionally while playing RO but Vista caught it and I was back playing in a few seconds. The only actual "crash" I've had with Vista itself was a BSOD when using the first Steam Community BETA. I don't reboot it unless I have to... I run custom themes... Don't recall ever actually noticing that the old menus were missing and was surprised when they appeared after pressing "Alt", in fact, the only thing I can recall I used this menu for in past Windows was Folder Options.

MS should extend the free trials of people who signed up during this time so we actually have a chance to play online. Anything less hurts their bottom line, in my opinion. All I have to go on is heresay on the internet about how great it is. The trial is supposed to be for MS to show me how great it is and convince me to spend my money on it. Blah.

They don't need to, they did that with the entire first year the Xbox 360 was released. :colbert:

I find it hard to believe that you've never actually met people who use the service. Then again, you are a little older so maybe most of the people you see on a daily basis aren't into games. I would think it fair to extend the trials but where do you draw the line?

On second thought, just hate MS. That'll make you feel better!

All the people I work with are old and lame (for the most part). The few college interns are too poor to afford a video game system.

Just for the record, the xbox live gold service could work flawlessly for me and I would still hate them (my hate for them has nothing to do with xbox/xbox live).
