Arg... that sucks. The WON servers for Half-Life have been shut down permanently and the only way to play online is through Steam. That sucks because now I have to buy myself another copy of Half-Life so I can get a CD-Key to get Steam to work. I'm not sure I want to shell out 40 bucks for a game I already own, even if I get the platium version that includes Blue Shift and CS retail (I already have OpForce). ARg!!!!!!

Why won't your old CD key work for steam?

It's only $20 though, or if you can just find Blue Shift, it's probably even cheaper(and comes with a CD key that will work).

*edit* Amazon has Blue Shift for only $10. I use a Blue Shift CD key to play and have never had problems, so it shouldn't be a problem for you.

If your CD doesn't work on the steam install (I don't see why it wouldn't...I never had a problem when I installed Steam) just send a pic of your HL copy with the CD key to Valve. It worked for a friend when the key was stolen.

I lost my CD-Key ages ago and I had a friend give me his CD-Key so I could play on the WON servers. He must had turned in his CD-Key into Steam so I can't use that CD-Key.

Well, my birthday is coming this friday and my sister is willing to buy me a gift so instead of that one gamepad I was hoping to get, I'll just ask her to get me Half-Life Platium Edition that is only 30 bucks at Gamestop. I have a 8 bucks worth "Game bucks" for selling some console game to them a while ago - that should save me some money on the game. Man... I was really hoping to get a gamepad though but then again, but I think can do without one for the time being.

Despite the bad rep it's getting, I think Steam really is a step forward in the right direction. It was buggy as hell on release, and it still has many things to smooth out, but overall I like the concept... All in one store/messenger/mod-fetcher...

This is interesting... while running Steam, I just discovered that you can actually buy the game through steam now for 34.95. I assuming that this will simply give you a CD-Key and allow you to download the games through steam. Despite this discovery, I think I'll just buy the game from Gamestop because it would only be 22 bucks with those "game bucks" I have.

I bought Half-Life and play through it for the first time last week. I've already made it through all three games. I'd play online, but as has been said, you need Steam. A download that would take me forever on 56k. So I'll stick to LANs.

You can find your CD key in your registry if you know where to look. Just go into regedit, ctrl+f "half-life" or "half life" or whatever it is, and look through all the files till you find one that says "CD-Key" or something similar. Copy down the value.

I got the original HL for $3 at Kmart awhile back. I had lost my CD and everything when I moved from AZ to OK and I jumped at the chance to regain my legal-ness.

I don't think that method would work because the cd-key I might find would be the cd-key that I got from my friend, not the one that came with the game. It's not like the cd-key that the game came with would be encoded on the CD itself that gets copied to the registery when you install it.

Spend several days downloading Steam just to be killed by players who are probably mostly idiots, or keep it on a LAN and play against people I know, trust, and who aren't idiots.

I like the latter best.
