This was inspired by a conversation I just had over MSN with a mate.

What is the one of the 5 regular senses that you couldn't stand to lose?

Honestly I think that if I lost the ability to hear I'd off myself. :tfti:
nope.

Proprioception and balance would probably be the worst to lose since you'd barely be able to function without them. But you said regular senses, so sight would be it for me.

Damnit i wish i choose sight.
Aw well.
2008-02-07, 6:22 PM #6
Id rather be blind than deaf.
Take that there and put it in here
2008-02-07, 6:29 PM #7
As a species, we are sight-dominated.

And, for that matter, 'touch' is a totally bogus classification for a sense. It incorporates all sorts of other senses, such as pain, pressure, heat, and muscle position.
Wikissassi sucks.

As much as I'd like to be a romantic and say deaf like you guys (oh what would I do without my music), living would just be that much more difficult without your sight. Sure not being able to hear what people are saying would make life really confusing, but you could still walk around a strange area and have some idea where you are.

Who said anything about living?

Like I said without hearing theres a chance I would off myself.
nope.
2008-02-07, 6:35 PM #10
Sight is a direct influence over another important organ in my body so I'll take that thank-you-very-much.

Touch has a stronger and more effective influence.

Srsly. Give up smell. It stinks.
Wikissassi sucks.
2008-02-07, 6:41 PM #12
It's not which you would give up, it's which you wouldn't want to live without the most.
nope.

Can't do aperture science without sight.

But jep!

Thus I would choose hearing over sight, because I couldn't stand to lose sight.

Sight would be horrible, but I think not being able to hear music ever again would drive me to suicide anyway.
Think while it's still legal.

Going deaf isn't terribly bad, there's plenty of workarounds for that (writing messages, sign language, lip reading, etc).

However, the workarounds for being blind is much shorter (braille, text-to-speech).

I just think about what I do now and what I couldn't do being blind:

1. Driving is completely out. No way around it.
2. Browsing the web becomes an absolute chore.
3. Can't enjoy video games like SMASH BROS :(
4. Writing in general becomes a chore.
5. Even walking around becomes far more dangerous (tripping, getting hit by stuff, being robbed, etc)

Ugh, I couldn't imagine it.

Touch.

You can be blind and still masturbate.

HAHAHA

Dude, trust me. Deaf sucks way worse than blind.

Not to mention fixing deafness is a lot closer than fixing blindness, at least last I checked.

Oh Rob there's about 1,200 people on my campus that would disagree with you. :P

The only cure for deaf is a work around, whereby you hear with your skull.

The blind get more free money that the deaf, so they can shove it. :P

I have a bunch of friends in deaf ministry... signing doesn't seem all that bad, comparing to being blind.
2008-02-07, 8:44 PM #27
The blind can communicate easily with everyone.

The deaf can communicate well with few people.
2008-02-07, 9:05 PM #28
I'm pretty sure if I were deaf, I'd still be able to use the internet and texting and READ and... um... a lot of other nifty things.

Being blind would hugely hurt my ability to learn new material.
2008-02-07, 9:07 PM #29
And for people like you that will stay inside for most of their life because they have aspergers, that probably works out.

For normal people the lack of ability to communicate clearly with the people around you is one of the hardest things to lose.

i love being able to hear things, thank you

i love food.

i love seeing the world, so much is fascinating to look at.

i love hearing things, sound fascinates me too.

smell i could do without, even though it would inhibit taste.

touch, i cant even imagine what that would be like. no pain no pressure no temperature? we are barraged by multiple touch sensations every second of the day.

but in the end i'd have to say sight. i could live with it, but i wouldnt want to.

Maybe face to face, yeah. But good luck over any other media.

Oh, and don't forget the CAN'T EFFING DRIVE part.

Get someone to do it for you.

The blind may be more dependant, but they're far less neurotic than the deaf. For sure.

Not that it would be much of a loss with the music you listen to. :v:
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.
2008-02-08, 2:48 AM #36
Touch. The rest I could live without but without touch I'd almost inevitably wound myself somehow and not even notice it, that can lead to infections, burns, gangrene etc. Even something as innocent as rubbing your heel raw from a crap shoe could do it. You'd quickly become disabled as you lose bits of your limbs. Ugh.
2008-02-08, 7:42 AM #37
i'd lose any but my sense of fashion

i justl ook too ****ing good
2008-02-08, 9:47 AM #38
As important as sight and proprioception are in terms of daily functioning, I feel that losing my sense of hearing would be losing my soul. I'd rather be severely disabled than lose such a big part of who I am. Hearing, without a doubt.

(Do people still teach the whole "five senses" thing to kids these days? I mean, it's kind of obvious that the traditional five don't cut it...)
2008-02-08, 10:22 AM #39
Of course they don't cut it. Taste and smell are essentially the same thing, and function the same way even, and 'touch' is really a whole bunch of senses bundled together. And there's the entire 'muscle sense' which is just kind of disregarded. You should try moving when your brain has no idea what position your limbs are in, I don't imagine it would be fun.

Really, though, it's quite impossible to contemplate life without any particular sense. They are such a fundamental part of us that we cannot possibly separate them from ourselves and properly imagine what it would be like. It's like trying to imagine life without a particular limb. You can think about it, but nothing would compare to actually looking down and not seeing your arm.

I wish there was such a thing as a 'Rob sense', so that I could give it up.
Wikissassi sucks.
2008-02-08, 11:00 AM #40
You're right, lets scrap the "five senses" thing and start teaching the complexities of the central nervous system to 8 year olds.

I don't know which I'd like to lose less out of sight and hearing. Sight would obviously let me sit in front of the computer, read, etc., such is my wont. But hearing would let me listen to music (obviously), which I greatly enjoy. So I don't know.
