I don't consider torrenting TV to actually be piracy, I pay for my cable and I don't have a Nielson box.

But in all eyes of the law it is illegal and piracy. TV shows are copyrighted material belonging to whomever produced the show. MGM can legally tell Sci-Fi to never play a single SGA episode so long as they exist.

Legality takes precedence over your opinion.

Just finished watching the episode. I going into disbelief when she started pulling her shirt up and then laughed out loud at "Found a rope!" and McKay's reaction.

On the plus side, Kaylee takes McKay on a date! Score for McKay!

However what you miss is that 99% of the shows you see on TV can be caught on their respective websites after the fact. If you used a capture program for these and then posted that, then the legality enters a much grayer area, and you could also just as easily apply that actual airings of the show are analogous to said situation.

It would have to be with ads, and even then, it would still be distribution without consent of the copyright owner, and is therefore copyright infringement.

The morality is certainly gray but the legality is not.

Is not taping a Television show to a VCR tape legal? Are not Tivo's and other DVRs legal? Why not using your computer to record a television show, and then watching it later.

Sending television shows to others is foggy, though. On one hand, it's just like taping a show and then mailing it to a few (thousand) of your closest friends. On the other hand, the fair use laws that made taping television shows, recording music from the radio to tape, etc were designed for face to face distribution/sharing, not the massive distribution available with the internet.

And the way I see it, downloading the shows others have recorded is exactly the same as taping them minus 100$ worth of 3rd party hardware. It's a slightly different means to the exact same end.

The whole system is carp. On TV, you're locked into one time frame, with lot of commercials for things that aren't even relevant to you. Streaming is ok, but not nearly as convenient as having a .avi file.

Taping a show and then mailing it to a friend isn't legal - you aren't allowed to distribute anything you record. If you record a tape on a VCR, it has to be for personal use.
