Hi guys.

I'm about to get a tax refund and i need a good monitor. i haven't bought one in a while so i'll go LCD probably. i'm not much of a gamer, i mostly work with sound programs and stuff so a wide display is cool. I was looking at brands and I was wondering what would the massassian techies would go for, Acer? Samsung? Lg? Some other?

17-22'' widescreen or not i don't really care. around 200-250$

I just got a Samsung SyncMaster 226BW (22" widescreen) monitor. It's pretty swell all in all and cost me like 299 euros so it's probably within that price range over there.

if you have a costco membership, i'd suggest you look into the lcd displays they offer. i got a 20'' widescreen with competitive specs (5 ms response, 1000:1 contrast ratio, 300 cd/m2) two years ago for $270. by now, they might have better models at cheaper prices (~$200).

The costco here sells only glossy :/

Oh yeah the monitor:

I use this monitor for my other computer in the house and it works great. It does fit your price range and I think it is the best you can get at this price.

I've been looking into buying an LCD widescreen monitor as well. Seems like a huge pain in the ***. They have different technologies they use for the screens, one is called TN, which is the cheapest, has the lowest response rate (a good thing), but has crappier image quality and viewing angles. I have a hard time finding anything other than a TN at local retailers, so it's hard to compare. It's also hard to compare monitor image quality in retail stores anyway, because they are all hooked up to standard analog ports (not DVI), and they use a lowest-common-denominator resolution. Beware of the tags at costco, I liked the look of one samsung monitor, and the tag says it supports DVI, but the box doesn't and I looked at the back of the monitor and saw only the regular analog one. I couldn't get an answer from them regarding whether it was just the display model that didn't have DVI or whether the tag was actually wrong.

I've always stuck with Viewsonic and have yet to be disappointed. I do hear a lot of good things about Samsung however.

my father is mr. "research before you buy". he's got a samsung monitor and tv.
two of my friends who are all about HD quality with their home entertainment and computers have samsung.
so i bought a samsung. it's the 24 wide screen model non-HD and it cost $400 with tax. :/ but i love it. it's nice for watching video like tv shows and podcasts.

Samsung makes some of the best monitors out there.

I think they're like the second largest manufacturer of laptop LCDs.

I have the Acer warlockmish posted

It's pretty rad.

Well, i'm not too picky, but i want my purchase to last. I'm not afraid to spend more than my budget to get a good 22inch widescreen, as long as i have money left for other stuff :P

samsung does look good. i'll shop around the town and see what's in stock at staples and the local mom and pop shop.

Keep in mind that 20.1" and 22" LCDs have the same resolution (1680x1050), so going up to 22" does not get you more screen "real estate". However, it does make the pixels larger, which some people like (nice for gaming because it's a bigger picture without having to run a higher resolution). Just something to keep in mind, I guess.
