So I was walking home from campus today and along the railroad tracks, I see a rather nice leather pouch just sitting there on the ground. Since this place if about a quarter mile from the campus, I figure it's something a college student dropped on the way to class. I pick it up to see what it is, it's an HTC PPC6800 (and it looks rather new). The battery in it is dead, of course, so I figure I'll take it home, charge it a bit, and see if I can't figure out whose it by calling someone in the phone book. No good, the phone is passworded and only allows emergency calls. So now I have no way of finding out who it belongs to. I know I'd feel :argh: if I lost a phone that costs upwards of $600 retail.

I see a few different options with this situation:
1. Try to find an unlock code and unlock the phone, call someone in the phone book, and return it to the owner.
2. Take the phone to the service provider and see if they can find the owner.
3. Take the phone as my own and use it instead of my current phone.

So what should I do?

First thing I'd try is take the SIM card out, put it in another phone and see if there are any numbers stored on it.

Definitely try to get it back to the person. How would you feel if your $600 phone fell out of your pocket and you never got it back?

Try the SIM card thing, otherwise bring it back to the store.

Try and return it, if not, hand it in somewhere.

Would suck having it on your concious everytime you get a phonecall.

Yeap, karma, try and return it.

If you cant find the owner then it's yours.

Yeah try and get it back to the person. If you found it in a lawyers office, or a starbucks... id say keep it. But like you said, it might be some hard working college kid's phone....

at the same time, it might be some spoiled college kids phone...

Either way, I'd return it. I'm not a big believer of karma, but I do think 'what goes around, comes around' eventually.

Well, I took it back to the provider and they told me they could find out whose it was. I'm sure the owner will be very happy when they get it back.

Anyone who is carrying around fancy hardware like that is likely to get plenty of calls. Just wait until someone does, and then ask who it belonged to.

They were probably drunk; it's FHSU. Keep it, their fault for being retarded.

EDIT: Or running from the cops, or both.
