Anyone have a Sony Ericsson K800i/K790?

I'm in the market for a new phone and this is a strong contender. I was wondering if anyone had one so I could hear some opinions. I'm tired of crappy phones that self destruct before my contract is even up.

I’ve got one, along with pretty much everyone I know. I think maybe they produced too many, and anyone getting a new contract last year was asked: do you want a good music player, or a good camera? Since I’ve got a sony walkman, ipod and iriver, I went for the camera option. The camera on it is pretty decent for a phone, I can’t see that you’d need anything better for taking photos on a night out or whatever. My friend has a couple of hundred saved on her phone so the memory’s not bad either.

I managed to drop mine down the toilet at a party a few months ago, and, while it did survive and still works (after drying out in the airing cupboard for a few days), it has never been quite the same.

It’s served me pretty well but I probably wouldn’t get one again, it has a few annoying habits like not letting you scroll through text messages, you have to open each individually which really bugs me. And it will sometimes cancel a dialogue box just before you click ok so that you end up opening whatever menu is behind it – this is particularly annoying with the alarms, as obviously when an alarm is going off you’re likely to be asleep, and therefore not very quick with your reactions - I have accidentally phoned friends at 7am quite a few times.

I can’t really think of anything else right now, feel free to ask me stuff and I’ll try to answer

Yeap I have a K800i also. It's a good phone and the camera is more than you'll ever need unless you're into some serious photography. The battery life is fine and it has all the features you'd want on a phone these days without going crazy with things like GPS.

Problems, I agree with Maevie on the cancelling dialogue boxes thing it's really annoying but you get used to it after a while. The take photo button is hard to accidentally press, but the view finder activates when the lens cover is slid open even when phone is locked. This is great when you're trying to snap a photo of a Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera with one hand and trying not to crash off a windy country road with the other (true story), but not so great when the thing has a habit of sliding open in your pocket and getting the lens all grimy and wasitng battery life.

Also a week or two after I got it I plugged it into the USB port of my PC and it instantly corrupted the software on the phone somehow and had to go back to Sony-Ericsson for a fix. I'd recommend just using Bluetooth instead of physically connecting the phone to anything.

I agree with most things Spork and Maeve said.

I've had mine for about 3-4 months now and I reckon it's awesome. And judging from my past experience with Sony Ericssons it'll take a good 5 years to break.

:P
nope.

Thanks guys.

One question I had is I've read the phone is recognized as a mass storage device, which is awesome. I've also heard you can transfer files over bluetooth. I'm pretty unfamiliar with bluetooth, so does this mean I could, say, offload all my pictures that are on the phone to my PC without plugging it in? If so, that's pretty cool.

maevie, you mentioned the storage capacity. From what I've read, the version I'd be getting at least has only 64 mb internal memory, or something like that, unless I missed something. However, it seems memory stick micro m2 cards are like $70 for 4 GB, so that's not too bad.

Memory sticks are cheap and plentiful on eBay.

If your mobo doesnt have a Bluetooth thingy you can buy a dongle that plugs into a USB port for around $10 which allows your PC to connect with any Bluetooth device. Works great for downloading pics and uploading MP3s.

Yeah, I have a bluetooth dongle. So you are able to transfer any kind of files over bluetooth to a PC?

Aye it just works the same as it would phone to phone.
nope.

Awesome. I wasn't sure if it was the kind of thing where only certain stuff can be transferred (like how some MP3 players won't let you use them as a hard drive).
