How do you see it?

I see it clockwise...

I have an incredible brain that can change her rotation as I watch.

First clockwise, then ccw, then cw, and last again ccw just for extra kicks.

It wasn't hard to change in the end. In fact the first switch happened unwittingly when I read the text next to it, and I wondered how I ever saw it cw in the beginning. But then I quickly switched it back to cw and immediately felt a feeling of great enlightement like a Buddhist on some mountaintop in Japan.

Usually starts at clockwise, then I blink and it changes, then I can't get it to change no matter how many times I look at the shadow, then it magically does and I realize I've taken the test probably the 100th time in the past X months.

I've never seen it before...

I can't make it go counter-clockwise. :(
2008-02-14, 2:26 AM #7
I just don't understand how you can make that go counter-clockwise.

You can see quite clearly from the positioning of the limbs that it is going in one direction alone. Unless the image itself changes pattern. Also, how the heck is it "Sequential, Rational, Analytical" or even "Logical" for it to go counter-clockwise? I just can't see that happening... ever. I think it's just a joke, especially because the image is called "clockwise.gif", duh.

I'm not convinced.

edit: this site is full of crap, example: http://mindbluff.com/spinner.gif, it changes it's direction because someone set it to in the .gif animation, not because your "mind" can see both sides. Don't believe me? It happens every 6 seconds.

Well I can 'make' her go both ways if I focus. You're just not seeing it. The moment you see the CCW movement you won't be able to believe you saw it CW first. It's not a 3d image so any perceived measurement of depth is entirely made up by your brain.

It's the same thing as seeing a wireframe cube inside out when you focus.

The spinner thing is crap, this one however is legit.
nope.
2008-02-14, 4:52 AM #10
It works best if the image has no perspective. I first taught myself to see it both ways in JED with the shift+arrow keys.
2008-02-14, 5:16 AM #11
The spinner one isn't crap, it does look like it changes every 6 seconds and that's the whole point.

Load up the file in an image editor, the file only has 3 frames each of which lasts 0.01 seconds. You can even delete the last frame to make it go faster and the illusion remains.

I used to be able to get it to go back and forth at will, but it's a lot harder now. I find it somewhat easier if I look at the shadow.

Someone needs to post that one modified gif that details the rotation.

Both! If you're having trouble switching from cw to ccw, just read the text, and the left half of your brain can be stimulated..
2008-02-14, 6:56 AM #17
Both. So far I must defocus to be able to switch.

Edit : Now I can change while watching. Whats fun is when I start seeing the top half going one way and the bottom half going the other.

The original direction is counter-clockwise, and it has nothing to do with whether or not you are right or left brained.

It's got absolutely nothing to do with what side of the brain you're using. The way it's spinning has to do with how the brain fills in the missing visual information. That fact is that all the information goes to the left half of the brain. That's where the inferior parietal and temporal lobes are, which receive visual information from the primary visual cortex, which receives partially processed images from the ganglion cells in the eyes.

Yeah, I remember seeing that animation a while back without any of the right brain / left brain BS. Someone added it on after the fact so people would be more likely to forward it in an email, most likely.

It's like that stupid paragraph with mixed-up letters that shows up from time to time; at one point someone added "only 14% of people can read this" or something, which is entirely untrue.

I can see how it's possible to view just the lady alone both ways (I can see it both ways myself) but to me the shadow would seem to indicate that it's spinning clockwise...

EDIT: Well it just occurred to me that it might not be a shadow, and instead a reflection... then it would be counter-clockwise...

Counter clockwise. I'm baffled as how anyone could see it go clockwise. I tried to see it both ways but I just can't pull it off.

The real question is what direction would it spin if it was on a conveyor belt and would it take off?

Immediately saw Clockwise but I see both now..and like Jep stated earlier, its really interesting when you get yourself to see the top going one way and the bottom the other.
