An 8600 GT? Why not go the extra hundred and get the 8800 gt?
Also- Phenom :gonk: D:

1) Need a motherboard
2) Need to up the videocard by a bit. At least get a 3850 or 3870...the 8600GT is a waste of money at this point.

3) Need a Core 2 instead of a Phenom.

Post your specs! Y'know, so we can compare...

Intel core 2 6600 at 2.4 Ghz
2GB RAM
2x SLI nvidia 8500 GT 512mb
250GB harddrive thing
lexmark 640 series printer

Should I add another gig of ram? I'm thinking about it but I'm not sure if it'll do much.

That's an AMD mobo. You need an Intel mobo to go with the Intel CPU you will be getting.

Intel makes me feel like I'm not wasting my money on crap.
2008-02-17, 11:45 AM #14
That's sold out.

Anyway, why are you getting 4gb ram?
2008-02-17, 12:03 PM #15
Because, I do a lot of multi-tasking and photo work. It does help load things faster.

Yeah, so for than to be realistically useful at all, you'll need a 64bit OS, and a fast Intel quad core CPU.
2008-02-17, 12:52 PM #17
He'll get about 3 GB with a 32-bit OS and certainly does not need quad core, although he has one chosen already.

That still doesn't make sense. Drop 2gb and get a c2duo and a non-****ty video card and some of these purchases might not seem so retarded.

How is a dual-core C2D better than a quad-core Phenom?

And yes, it does make sense for photo work. Photoshop eats RAM for breakfast.

At 2 gigs you're more than covered, unless you're a graphic designer. Photo work isn't THAT intensive, trust me. And Phenoms have a horrible cache problem which, even at stock clocks, has been plaguing users. Look it up, even [H] has done an article on it. Getting a phenom's really a stupid idea period, but this man's hellbent on wasting his money and wasting his time, so who cares.

The Phenom is easily the buggiest mass-produced processor since the original Pentium. And the original Pentium's bugs were limited to a faulty implementation of IEEE 754.
2008-02-18, 2:49 AM #24
And not a race condition in a critical component of the processor, causing the whole system to hard-lock when it is under heavy use (i.e. the sort of use you'd buy a quad core processor for).
2008-02-18, 2:50 AM #25
Buying a Phenom is dumb.
2008-02-18, 5:20 AM #26
Quick specs... im lazy

200GB HDDs(from old machine)
new mobo
8800GT 512

Is it really that bad? Wow, I figured a Phenom would still be better than a Core 2 Duo simply by virtue of four cores, but hard-lock D:

It only happens over 2.4 GHz, I think, and they're fixing it, but it's still dumb.
2008-02-18, 7:55 AM #32
That's dumb. My 1.8ghz intel dual core duo 2 (or whatever. How many ways can they fit '2' into the name?) with 2gb ram and intel integrated graphics handle my 4000*4000 pixel paintings fine.
Wikissassi sucks.

No it doesn't, it just becomes more likely over 2.4 GHz.

The solution is to reduce system performance by up to 20%.
