I was wondering if any massassians would be willing to help me design the cover of my chapbook (A very short book of poems). Historically, chapbook covers were wood carvings or large stamps.

I'm hoping to have this chair, colorized brown on a light blue foreground, yellow ground, and a lit lightbulb sitting on its cushion with a cord leading off the cover. I'm not looking for anything photo realistic, and am instead going for the wood carving/stamp concept.

Here's my failure at the cover.

Here is the basic layout requirements. Bleed is in blue, graphic cutoff is in the dotted line.

Rewards: A free signed book (shipping included!) and if that isn't enough, I'll throw in either an SA membership, or some other 10 dollar online purchase. I'm not going to be selling this book for any more than a dollars profit, so I'll probably end up losing money in the end.

<3 In advance!

I like it a lot, but is there any way you can make the chair a lot bigger in the scene, and maybe make the horizon line flat? I was also thinking that it'd be cool to give the walls and floor some texture of their own, like the chair. Oh, also, can you clean up the random odds and ends under the chair? I don't mind the shadow, but the other stuff is really distracting.

If you can make those changes, that'd probably be perfect. Unless someone else wants to take a stab at it, I think that'll be my cover!

You lost the cord and chair shadow.
2008-02-17, 8:33 PM #11
I know. I didn't want to deal with fixing parts of the chair shadow. As for the cord shadow, its still there, you just have to look at the hi-res file (psd).

How is that lightbulb being powered?! The wire is only touching one terminal!

It seems like you completely redid the chair. I liked the tones and color a lot better before, and it just seems muted now.

And I was thinking more about posterization for the background elements, not so much business and lines. Any way we can go with the same kind of texture that's on the front of the couch cushion for both the ground and the wall?

And I appreciate your work. I hate to be too nitpicky, as beggars can't be choosers. If you'd rather leave it as is, I certainly won't complain.

This better? The chair looks different because the filter I used for the posterized look worked different when I did some of the first alterations.

I like it a lot. My only criticism is how busy the lightbulb looks (And I still like the posterization the most in the first one). Otherwise, it's really well done. The black cord shows up a lot more in the PSD?

I'm going to wait for voodoo to do some lino block attempts, and let anyone else have a go.

Thanks a lot timewolf!

Progress so far Kirby.
Four colors.

I can take out the line texture in the back ground. I'm not happy with the cord at the moment too fat it think. I plan to get yellow back in around light bulb but The light bulb is at the point I really can't carve anymore detail :( I might have to tinker with paint or photoshop to get it to look ok.

I must admit that TimeWolf's is significantly better, and would certainly be my choice. Although it needs the shadow on the chair and cord to give it some more depth. The cord might also be thicker, to make it easier to see on print media.

Well even so you could do it manually, pretty much anything is better than PS filters which totally scream, like, "I ASKED AN INTERNET FORUM TO DO MY BOOK COVER FOR ME":awesomelon:
