Half Life 2 SDK: Hammer... Anyone?
2008-02-18, 11:20 AM #1
Just wondering if anyone around here edits for HL2. I'm just now starting into it and seeing that HAMMER looks amazingly, and functions quite similarly to JED. I think the transition (though I havent touched jed in years) shouldn't be too traumatizing for me. Been reading a few tutorials. If anyone knows a good modding community for it link me up please.

Also any advice is appreciated.

I fired it up a few times but I never spent the time to get good at it.

It functions quite similarly to Satan.

But I guess the Steampowered community is your best bet. Or a very good one at least.

I'm not following how a brushed based editor is quite similar to how JED works.

Not the technology, just how it is designed. How it lays itself out and how easy it is to jump in and start once you get the basic controls down.

I fiddle around with it when I can, I don't have the time to really dry to start something because of college. If you're looking for some help, go to Interlopers, they have a crap load of tutorials and the forums are great. The Snark Pit is another one, but it's not quite as good or as expansive as Interlopers.

I use it for a project that I'm working on. The Valve Developer Community has lots of good information, though a bit of it could be fleshed out.

If you've never used GTK Radiant then yeah it's a nice editor.
I personaly find it very irritating.
Not nearly as irritating as the number of times valve breaks things with their mandatory updates.

I bought HL2 with every intention of making that my new mapping toy... I've played the game like twice and left it at that. I think I'll force myself to tinker with it in the near future. I have lots of ideas built up, and nowhere to go with them.

Yeah, same here. It's still hilarious how more-or-less-Quake-based games still have no idea what "in-editor lighting" means. And it doesn't take hours compiling vastly complicated levels in UE games either.

A shame the only properly editable UE3 games ATM are either Gears of War and UT3, both MP/shoot-shoot-shoot oriented. An editor for Bioshock combined with few tactical changes there and there to make it as open (or better yet, more open) as DX or SS2 would have been magnificent. Oh well.

I liked GtKradiant. I don't have any real problems with it.

Prefer the D3 engine editors though, the scripting side is a ton easier, and the real time editing is a huge bonus.

But GTK had really nice shortcuts and things that were just damned useful.

Never touched the HL2 engine because at the time I was like "Realtime is da futureee!!111" but might have a look at it for some projects at uni.

Editing in real time is fun, Sandbox (wasnt that FarCry's editor?) was fun.

Too bad not many games outside of Valve use the Source engine. Besides Dark Messiah Might and Magic and Sin Episode, I think that's it.

Yeah but the source engine will be around for a while. Like the Q3 engine. They just keep making it better.

UT3 is an engine that's been getting action around. Q3 lasted so long because devs of different companies liked it.

Of course. This is why Valve is doing this whole "Developer Community" thing.

Unreal Engine 3, whatever. If you want to get technical, the Quake 3 engine should be called now on as id Tech 3 and the Doom 3 engine as id Tech 4.
