Total lunar eclipse tonight

When to watch

Eclipses occur only at full moon when the sun, Earth and moon are in a perfect line. Because the moon's orbit around Earth is not perfectly aligned with the plane of Earth's orbit around the sun, eclipses do not occur at every full moon.

The moon will enter Earth's umbral shadow (the full shadow) at 8:43 p.m. ET (that's 7:43 p.m. Central, 6:43 p.m. Mountain and 5:43 p.m. Pacific) on Wednesday, Feb. 20. It will appear as though an ever-larger bite is being taken out of the moon.

Some 78 minutes later, the moon will slip into full eclipse. About 51 minutes later, a bright scallop will appear as the moon starts emerging. It will be completely out of the umbral shadow at 9:09 p.m. Pacific time, which is 12:09 a.m. ET on Thursday morning.

For Europe and Africa, the eclipse is a predawn Thursday event, with the moon starting entry to the umbral shadow at 1:43 Greenwich (or Universal) Time.

Hopefully it isn't cloudy, I always seem to miss these, and it's the last until 2010.

Life is beautiful.

No problem. I debated if I should post about it or not, but I figured if it helps one interested person not miss it, it's probably worthwhile.

As for here, it's currently clear. Forecast says mostly cloudy at 8 PM, and then partly cloudy from 9 PM onward, so here's hoping.

Good thread, Aglar

Cloudy here too. As usual when there is something cool going on in the heavens.

It's partly cloudy here, but still going to watch it.
Also see if you might be able to observe the decaying spy satellite USA 193 tonight. The site http://www.heavens-above.com. has predictions of times and location in the sky that you can see it depending on your location.

It's pretty clear out here...for now. I'll try to watch just cause the background stories always make it a bit more interesting.

Oh, yeah, aren't they going to try and take it out around 10 PM EST?

[edit]Actually, looks like the first attempt might be at 12:30 AM EST.

It is clear out and 5.2 degrees Fahrenheit out side and I am trying to get my hands to thaw out. I am trying to take photographs. My sister had her telescope out. Usually trying to look at the full moon with it about fries you eyes because the light is so bright. I was seeing hints of blue at the edge of the shadow. If you guys have binoculars they work good for watching the eclipse.

A missile reportedly just hit the satellite.
2008-02-20, 8:11 PM #22
Yeah, ended up being perfectly clear here. Quite a sight.
2008-02-20, 8:21 PM #23
It's so shiny... I was at a friend's house playing poker and I was all like "hey you guys take a look at the moon" and it was all like red and stuff... awesome.

It's far away till we get there. Then we'll look back and think it wasn't really that long.

Boring. Solar eclipses are way cooler.

True, they're cooler, but they're only viewable from a tiny area. At least half the planet can enjoy a lunar eclipse.

Phoenix and Backslash, how did you guys get pictures with you cameras so magnified? Surely a regular camera wouldn't be able to produce something that large.

You have to use an SLR. I tried to get a few of it at it's apex, but I was kind of disappointed.
