Car speaker suggestions

I bought a 98 GMC Jimmy last week and after about 5 days of getting a few things fixed on it (yay 2 year full parts and labor extended warranty), I want to replace the stock speakers with some after market speakers since the ones it has are going bad. However, my knowledge of car audio systems is very low and I'm looking for some suggestions. Right now I'm only looking to replace the front door speakers since they're the ones that are the worst (i'll replace the others later). Their size is 6.5" and I'm willing to spend around $100.00 USD (will go more if I'm given good enough reason to).

Some of my friends have told me to get the Sony and Pioneer speakers that Wal-Mart sells, but I'm not too trusting of Wal-Mart items since my last few auto related purchases have crapped out on me after a couple months.

Any suggestions?

I'd go to the junkyard and rip the stock speakers out of another one.

Thats probably the cheapest option.

The local salvage yard charges out the *** to get replacement parts from wrecked/disabled vehicles they have. On my last vehicle I had to pay $90 to get a replacement headlight housing. Then they charged me $15 on top of that for them to remove it from the vehicle so I could have it.

Your junkyard sucks.

Find another one.

If you get anything expensive someone will steal it.

You can get a nice pair of speakers for that price range. Maybe not super audiophile stuff, but plenty good enough for the average joe and WAY better than stock.

Take a look at Infinity Kappa series. I run 4 Infinity Reference (lower line than Kappa) speakers in my 91 Camaro and they've performed VERY well, better than expected, for what I paid. (I think I paid about $60 for a pair of 6x9s and $40 for a pair of 4x6s) Consider yourself lucky that your car came with round speakers factory, you will always get better sound from a round speaker like a 6.5" than an oval speaker like a 6x9.

I do use a stand alone amp to drive them, as this is how you will get the best performance from your speakers. You don't have to though.

Pioneer makes some great 6.5s. Should be able to get some decent 2way speakers for 100 bucks. You only need a pair?

I only need to replace the ones in the front doors because they're the ones that have blown out. I'm planning to replace the others later as well as get a sub, but that's later down the road, probably this summer.

Crutchfield says those won't fit in the front door of a 98 Jimmy :(.

I've had good experiences with Kicker, though I'll admit I haven't been keeping up with the car audio world.

I worked on a moving job for Mr. Polk. He's a really cool guy, has a bunch of antique tractors and all sorts of cool stuff.
