Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles

I haven't noticed any threads on the show since it started. I've Media Centered all the episodes so far. I really enjoy the series. The season finale is coming up on Monday. Pretty lame that "seasons" can be so few episodes but I guess networks are much more conservative with risky ventures now days.

The most recent episode featured a whacked out Dr. Silverman. I would have appreciated it more had they gotten the original actor to do the work but they chose the senator from X-Men / old dude from [new] Knight Rider. Only part I haven't liked so far. Other than that, I'm very cool with it so far.

The season was so short because of the writer's strike.

I've really liked that they're tying things in with the movies to give it some good continuity.

I was going to bring up the writers strike but next week is a two hour finale and this entire series aired during the writers strike. Still, I'm sure it played some part. Greedy writers actually really f'd up what seemed to be a promissing season in general (in my opinion).

They do exclude Terminator 3, saying it happens in an alternate timeline, and adjust dates from the movies to make it more fit in with current dates. For example, T2 now took place in 1997 according to the last episode.

The whole thing, and I've given it several tries. It just falls flat in everything that I require for a show.

It's okay, though. I hated 24, heroes, and stargate, making my opinion pretty invalid to most tv goers.

Yeah, the timing is off, but they tied in the 800 series infiltrating the resistance hide out from the first movie (Kyle was there, his photo of Sarah burns), the brought back the guy that Sarah and John went to get guns from in T2, the facility that Sarah was in. John mentioned his foster parents that the T1000 killed. They're all nice touches.

In principle, this series should be awful. As an idea, it should be awful.

...but somehow, it actually works really well. I've been pleasantly surprised every episode. The only slightly odd part is how Cameron (ohhh Summer Glau I love you) was perfect at pretending to be human in the first episode and fooled John, but then as soon as John knows she's a machine she becomes cold and heartless.

(Possible explanation for this is that in the future she was given very specific programming on how to act around John, rather than adapting and learning like she does now. Hmm.)

It's such a shame the series is cut short, it doesn't really let it shine and it's probably a risky venture to invest in a second series. :-(

Bloody hell, I totally didn't know they had started airing it already.

Should check it out soon enough.

If you were 15 and Summer Glau sat down next to you, would your attention be focused on determining whether she's human or not? ;p

I think the show is good. It's fun to watch, but overall not very memorable. Will continue to watch, but definitely not one of my top picks.
2008-02-27, 12:24 AM #11
I've watched every episode so far. I did so because I really, truly wanted this to be the next outstanding action series. It isn't. It's not even particularly good.

Maybe I like it less than Mort does because I had higher expectations. Maybe I'm just frustrated because the show has consistently failed to capitalize on its number one potential crowd-pleaser: Summer Glau beating up dozens of mere mortals, ala the Maidenhead in Serenity. I don't know. I don't hate this show, it's just that I can't bring myself to care about it.

Oh? My favourite part of the Terminator movies (and robot-related sci-fi in general) is how the robot 'learns to be human', the errors it makes and how it learns. There's only the odd scene here and there with Cameron at school, but I enjoy those scenes. I imagine if the series hadn't been cut short there'd be a lot more 'character development' rather than just rushing through essential storyline.
The 'future scenes' were pretty cool too. That's what I was sort of expecting of Terminator 3, that it would end up tying into the future and we'd see Arnie sent back to the first movie. After the crippling disappointment of the third movie, I don't think I could afford to have high expectations of the series.

I also like how future John Connor clearly thought 'Hmm. When I was 15, what sort of robot protector would I identify with... Hot girl robot!. And then a second later '...wait, better make sure she doesn't obey my 15-year-old self's every command...'.

The one thing that's been bugging me the most every episode is Sarah Connor. Did any of the writers even watch T2? She's a completely different character. Kid John seems kind of similar except he's a lot more whiney.

And what is up with the clothes they wear? I don't expect them to all be wearing military gear but there's a line between practical and 'normal' looking, and they're not on it.

I mean Cameron was wearing a denim miniskirt in the last episode I watched. How is that practical?
2008-02-27, 3:18 AM #14
I think the heterosexual male audience really doesn't care about 'practical'.

I think the entire fan community, regardless of sexual preference, should be concerned about the effects of denim miniskirts on hand-to-hand robot combat. :colbert:

The whole scene in the future with the old house and the music in the basement didn't seem very Skynet-y.

I like that they're doing good continuity stuff but the problem is that no human-camoflaged terminator will ever be as good as Arnie. As much as Summer Glau is a hotty she was a much better River than a terminator.

Yea, I agree... totally different Sarah.. which kinda throws me off. And I hate that when she tilts her head and moves her eyes to the corner. I dunno, it just annoys me.

But I liked the series so far. I'm a huge fan of terminator, so that might make up for any sucking the series might have to non-fans. I dunno, it seemed pretty predictable though. I dunno if they were lucky guesses on my part (I mean some things didn't happen), but I had a feeling a lot of things would happen that did.

Anyone else go "ooooh ****" when the T-1000 lookalike (Cameron) showed up?

Hope it continues on for a couple seasons. I don't see how it can really continue past a certain point, for a time perspective.
2008-02-27, 5:13 PM #22
I also noticed how Cameron was super realistic as a teenager when John didn't know she was a Terminator and then less so afterwards. I imagine that was simply a feature of her specific programming for that mission. Now she is more like Arnie in T2 trying to adapt to dynamic situations.

Also, I agree that new Sarah doesn't really match previous Sarah. That really is just the nature of the beast. It's a TV series with a completely new cast and the actors have to make the characters their own. There is still an edge to the character but it's not as sharp as Hamilton previously portrayed. I think it is reasonable to assume that the years together, after the mental hospital, have allowed their personalities to relax a little.

There aren't really any "perfect" shows on TV anymore. I used to not watch any as they aired, preferring to rent or buy the DVDs. Now that I have the XBox 360 as a media center extender I PVR things on the computer and watch them when I want. The most perfect show I have watched recently is Life. Excellent show in my opinion. Chuck would be next after that with the only criticism being that every show seems to be almost exactly the same. I have a ton of Shark and Law and Order to watch if I ever feel up to it. Battlestar Galactica and 24 are the next shows that I am interested in. I also enjoy Moonlight.

I found it interesting you brought up Firefly. I like the show (bought in on DVD while I was deployed) but it is immensly overrated by a certain crowd.

Heroes was great fun to watch for free through the Netflix Watch it Now but would have been hard for me to keep up with on a weekly basis.

Agree with everything you say (of course, they are facts). My point was just that they had to update some things and that they, smartly, disregard one movie.

I think you misinterpreted a comment about the key demographic as being a subtle insult towards you. I could be wrong but I doubt that was the case.

I found that scenario abit off too. It was interesting that they were using an older, rubber skinned model though.

I didn't actually think he was insulting me, but it could read that way. My reply wasn't serious. Well, the second part of it was.

Well, the final two episodes aired tonite. Acceptable. The last one was pretty good. Now off to wikipedia to see how long I have to wait for new ones.

You can't really compare the budget of a TV show to that of a $150 million movie. They just aren't ever going to be on the same level.

To me the effects all seem top notch. I guess some people just expect virtual orgasms when it comes to some properties.

I wouldn't argue with anyone's opinion but, to me, it seems a little overstated to equate it to a low budget fan film.

Obviously I've already stated I like the series but I would appreciate more consistent mechanical manerisms from the terminator characters. I'm not really talking about how they move but more how they look at things. I think Arnold actually had it down best in the first movie followed by Robert in the second. Or maybe even the other way around.

Maybe the actors are already trying their best or the directors find it a moot point since they are trying to show how well terminators are adapting and fooling people. Whatever.

Is there even going to be a second season? It seems a risky venture. I saw an interview with Lena Headey (Sarah Connor) and she herself seemed to suggest that the programme was risky and might be a failure.
