Dual Monitor Question
2008-02-27, 6:40 PM #1
I recently got a dual monitor setup and one minor problem I've run into is if I'm trying to watch a youtube video (or a site similar) and I want it to be full screen on the second monitor: I can't click anywhere else without it exiting full screen mode.

Anyone know a way around this or am I doomed to watch non-full screen youtube videos while I'm doing other things?

No I don't think there is a way around that. You can use a media player to watch on ther other screen, but it will be choppy if you are doing other tasks at the same time.

Not really, it should play fine, unless you're doing something really really intensive. I browse the net and watch anime all the time.

The issue lies in the browser not keeping fullscreen focus unlike most media players. I don't ever use fullscreen on youtube (cause it looks HORRIBLE) but I can't think of a solution.

i had this same problem while watching in a browser. i could watch full screen in miro or wmp without a problem.

Well I can use it for external programs, I suppose it is a browser problem. Perhaps there's no way around it :(

It's probably a problem with the flash player they are using. Multiple monitors probably didn't get factored into the design.

VideoDownloader for Firefox can download YouTube (as well as other) videos, you could then watch them in an external player.

While we're on the topic, anyone know any free aps which stretch the one background across both screens?

The best dual monitor program is UltraMon, which isn't free. Well, not really. :ninja:

It is worth the money, though. It adds taskbars to the other monitors, and when you drag a window to another monitor, it goes onto that taskbar.

Yeah it doesn't seem like there's a solution to this unless youtube (or other sites) change the nature of their full screen modes. Thanks though.

I might check out that UltraMon program though, looks like it could be useful.

Theres probably no way to get around it since its the flash full screen functionality

Try moving the browser window to the monitor you want the full screen to be on.

If that doesn't work, nVidia card users can use the nVidia control panel to swap the order of the two monitors. Then just go into Display Properties and fix the orientation of the monitors, and move the taskbar back to the original monitor if it switched. Now the monitor you want will take all the fullscreen stuff.

I agree with CM on this one. I don't know much about duals, but you can get the player showing a pretty decent sized screen before going full, so perhaps you should try that option. YouTube is horrible video quality on fullscreen so I don't bother usually.

Well youtube sucks... as for playing file videos... VLC player rocks. One screen playing whatever while you surf/game on the other...

VLC player blows. The interface is horrid. MPC + CCCP is much better.

Interface? Its just a basic player that will play anything you throw at it. Link to said 'much better'?

I've had this issue before, and sadly there isn't really a way around it =/

Are we talking about quality, or the fact that it doesnt stay full screen if you focus another window? If its the second, Im pretty sure thats just a security feature built into flash.

The non-fullscreen issue.

It's because Youtube, unlike e.g. Veoh, doesn't open a new window when you want to fullscreen. I can fullscreen on Veoh (then F11 to make it an actual fullscreen) on one monitor and leave it playing perfectly while continuing to work on another monitor. But not on Youtube :(

That's cause Veoh doesn't do "proper" real fullscreen. It just stretches to the browser window.

Which allows me to do my 2-screen magic :)

This is it exactly actually. If YouTube still just made it stretch to a browser window, I would have no problem, but the point is the way it's designed now: If I had one monitor only and went to full screen mode on YouTube and I simply clicked the mouse, it would exit full screen. Incidentally if I have a separate browser window open on my secondary monitor and click on anything in my primary monitor, it exits full screen. So actually the old way YouTube used to do full screen would be better for my set-up but oh well, I think I'll survive.
