New NIN release
2008-03-02, 7:41 PM #1
Chances are most people who care about this kind of thing already know about it, but I figured I might as well post.

Trent Reznor just announced the immediate release of a new 36 track instrumental album called Ghosts.

http://ghosts.nin.com/main/home

Some background:
Quote:
Nine Inch Nails presents Ghosts I - IV, a brand new 36 track instrumental collection available right now. Almost two hours of new music composed and recorded over an intense ten week period last fall, Ghosts I - IV sprawls Nine Inch Nails across a variety of new terrain.

Trent Reznor explains, "I've been considering and wanting to make this kind of record for years, but by its very nature it wouldn't have made sense until this point. This collection of music is the result of working from a very visual perspective - dressing imagined locations and scenarios with sound and texture; a soundtrack for daydreams. I'm very pleased with the result and the ability to present it directly to you without interference. I hope you enjoy the first four volumes of Ghosts."

Definitely wasn't expecting anything like this so soon, I'm really psyched.

But at least the stuff is getting released in forward thinking ways.

IMO that's more important than the music itself.

I don't know if that's more important than the music's quality, but I do agree. Trent Reznor is a very forward thinking artist.

And since giving it a listen, Ghosts is pretty good.

I'm not going to get into a pissing match over something that's completely subjective. Personally, I wasn't too impressed with With Teeth, but really felt that Trent was back with Year Zero. Ghosts is awesome if you're a fan of NIN's instrumental stuff, really kind of feels like it spans the differences in styles from The Fragile up until now (I know this is kind of odd since supposedly the whole thing was done in 10 weeks last fall).

It's really great to see people who don't even particularly like NIN paying the $5 to support the release model.
2008-03-03, 8:00 AM #11
I loved With Teeth and Year Zero both. I'll definitely be buying this, too. I love the instrumental stuff.

I've been intrigued by NIN but never really been a fan. I'm trying to download Ghosts I but it seems their server is nuked at the moment. If I like it I'll gladly pay $5 for the full download, especially since you can get it in multiple formats that are all DRM free. 320 kbps MP3, FLAC? Nice work, Trent.

Not sure how the site is responding for the free download (Ghosts I, 9 tracks). If it's still down, try The Pirate Bay, there's an official torrent for it.

(Let's not link to TPB even if the music is freely downloadable)

Lots of seeds.

Yea i really like what I've heard. I had also heard about how Trent Reznor was encouraging remixing... so maybe ill take a shot at it!

I feel the same way. Whenever a new album comes out I try and get into it, but I just can't. Some music can grow on me, his can't.

Same.

I'm going to go with the 5 dollar download just to support it, and to get 36 freakin tracks. I'm bound to enjoy one of them, and in the least find something useful for video. It's all CC if I recall.

I don't understand. Torrents are legal, torrents of legal things are legal. Only torrents of illegal things should be frowned upon, why can't the link to the torrent of something legally free be posted? It's like linking to a torrent of a Linux distro.

Not to derail.

It's an officially sanctioned torrent, CoolMatty. It was submitted by Nine Inch Nails themselves. It's not just a torrent of otherwise freely downloadable music, it was put there on purpose by the creators.

(CM - This wasn't up for debate)

"Now that we're no longer constrained by a record label, we've decided to personally upload Ghosts I, the first of the four volumes, to various torrent sites, because we believe BitTorrent is a revolutionary digital distribution method, and we believe in finding ways to utilize new technologies instead of fighting them."

Okay, I just listened to Ghosts I, and I liked it at least a little. I just bought the full download for $5. I've only listened to a fourth of it and it's 36 tracks for $5, which is beyond reasonable. I also like the thought of supporting the distribution model. I like that I can download it in FLAC, too. 320 kbps MP3 encoded with LAME is more than enough for anyone, but I like the thought of having an exact copy of the music that I'd normally get with a CD.

I think being able to download it in FLAC is the best part. FLAC needs way more love.

Now if my iPod played flac, I'd be set.

You can use Apple Lossless. Or just MP3, since lossless for portable devices is kind of dumb.

i've decided on the $10 cd option.... simply because i want the cd packaging... unless i win some money and can easily spare $300 (or even $75) that uber package would be like a tangible form of pure awesome

You know there's no audible difference between FLAC and say, 160 Kbps MP3, right?

No, an MP3 encoded with LAME at 160 Kbps will be audibly lossless for most all samples. Try a double blind test if you don't believe me.

Of course you probably won't ever try a DBT since you like to live in a world of audiophile delusion.

I've tried it. I did that very exact same thing. I loaded up my media player with my 160Kbps transcode leak of We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank, and put it on random with the same album ripped at lossless and coded with FLAC. I can quite easily identify the FLAC version. I'll even do a video for you and prove as much. I also have a hearing loss, and I can still tell a great deal of difference.

Transcode "leak," what?

The source file for the two encodings must be identical. Use WinABX.

Of course that probably won't do much since you probably have confirmation bias out the ***.

Emon: This is not up for debate. I acknowledge that the torrent is legal, but the other 99% of TPB is not. As such, I will not allow links to TPB in any form, not just because I don't want to, but because I have TOS's to follow.

I'd say that a 192kbps file is unaudible. There's numerous graphs and references that attest to this fact. You'd have to have the hearing level of a canine to differentiate between them. We simply do not have that level of hearing.
2008-03-04, 2:21 PM #32
Google can also link to illegal material by viewing recent or popular searches. Are we not allowed to link to that?

I understand why you're doing it I just think it's all pretty stupid. Especially since (if I recall correctly) the issue was legally resolved a while ago. That thing with Google supposedly promoting piracy because you can find pirated material with it.

Google also doesn't pride itself on its illegal content, nor does it run a tracker for said illegal content >.>

HI EVERYONE IF YOU WANT THE FIRST 9 SONGS FROM GHOSTS GO TO A TORRENT SITE. ITS EASY SEARCH FOR "NINE INCH NAILS GHOSTS"

Yeah, it's fine, Emon. I personally didn't think it would be a problem, which was why I posted it, but I can see CM's point and respect it. If anyone wants it, they know where to look.

Now, let's get back to talking about the goodness that is Ghosts.
2008-03-20, 10:58 AM #36
I paid $10 for the hard copies and the tracks... So far so good, I love NIN nails though. I still have about 30 tracks I havent heard though haha.

Emon's right. TPB is not illegal. It is a search engine. But whatever, doesn't matter.

Censoring it probably just made a bunch of Massassians go there if they havn't already anyways.

They're having a film festival dealyo.

If you're interested search it on youtube. I dont want to post it because I am afraid I might get in trouble. :downswords:
