So the alternate ending is going to be pretty relevant. I think it completely answers the questions about the suggested self-awareness of the zombie-types, and is much more true to the spirit of the book.

Editor's note that would interest only video production majors:

Also, this explains some of the shoddy editing of the original ending. They spent a lot more film on this ending, and the other was probably an afterthought. It might have even been shot at a later date, hence why the consecutive shots of the zombie slamming his head against the window in the original film are over the exact same shots of will smith looking at the glass each time, and they filmed his reaction shots from the opposite direction. Also why the girl is in a very obvious and particular position in the theatrical ending that seems claustrophobic one minute, and much bigger the next.

Pretty good, and I would probably prefer it in the film than the one we got. But I still feel the title worked better with him dying. And wtf bridge being there to cross at the end?

That was terrible.

I read the beginning of the book when I was little, and I thought my dad said that it ends more like the movie but without any sort of colony or specific sign of hope. How does that make this true to the spirit of the book?

The title works in the other version because it's pointing to the original meaning of the title in the book.
In the book they capture him and he comes to realise that he is the legend, the monster that kidnaps people and kills them while they sleep. He's the merciless predator. They perhaps should've made more of an emphasis on the photos of all the dead test subjects in the end sequence to hammer it home a bit better.

I'm guessing the ending with humanity's position in nature being unsure was too negative for the mainstream audiences? It was still positive but it's not exactly all "Everything's going to be better and we can reverse this" like the cinema ending was.

Your dad was wrong?

The book shows that they had a successful society, and that the protagonist was actually the antagonist of their new vampire society.

Having not read the book - what I hear is in the book Neville had become so callous and violent towards the infected he didn't realize that they might have just as much of a right to live as humans. Which is the point - is that being human doesn't exactly make your life worth more than another.

That was a much better ending. Good find!

I didn't really like the alternate ending. It felt like a copout. Plus, throughout the rest of the movie, the "zombies" never showed any sign of working together, and all of a sudden, this one "zombie" is their "leader" or something? Bull.

Plus as mentioned above, "legends" are usually legends because they die doing something heroic.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

Lassev: I guess there was something captivating in savagery, because I liked it.

Yeah, the zombies would have had to be a bit different through out for that ending to work. What did they eat anyway? There wasn't enough live meat to sustain them all.

It seemed to me they were always working together. The first time you seem them they're huddled together as a group. The alpha male mimics Neville's trap and seems to clearly show intelligence. Then you see them assault his 4x4 as a group and then invade his house practically as a small army. The alpha guy seems to be ordering them about at that point and is clearly dominating over them when he turns up in the basement flinging the others out of his way.

Legends don't have to be heroes, they can be legends of infamy. There are legends of terrible monsters throughout all sorts of cultures: Werewolves, Sea monsters ,Bunyips, Tokoloshes etc

The one zombie was also controlling two dogs during the movie. That would go along with the idea that they had a slightly structured society.

Let's look at the facts. I Am Legend blew, for the most part. It removed all the parts that made the book awesome and replaced it with crappy bits.

Now, with that in mind, don't criticize this ending for the crappiness of the rest of the movie. I think this ending was much better for this movie, although all in all, it's pretty bad.

I disagree with the above post, and quite enjoyed the film.

I agree, I enjoyed watching the movie. It wasn't a masterpiece, but I'll be damned, I went in thinking that Will Smith couldn't carry a movie for two hours by himself. I was proved wrong.

I'm torn between them. I liked both for completely different reasons.
I really liked the movie, as timewolf said, it wasn't a materpiece but I still found it to be very entertaining.

Hah, yeah, I couldn't get over how stupid you'd have to be to not see "I Am Legend ALTERNATE ending"

Honestly, I don't have a strong positive feeling towards either ending. I was hoping the 'cure' would be an airborne strain of virus as well, and thus slow spread converting the infected back. I guess I never liked the idea that 'Zombies are people too'.
