I didn't read the story before I posted. Frankly, I get enough of that when I'm actually getting paid for it. I read the headline because that was all that was required of me to understand what the thread was about. It's a terrible headline, and speaking as someone who also gets paid (albeit poorly) to write headlines, any copy editor with half a brain should have known better than to put "Butte" and "sex" together in a headline because it would provoke exactly the kind of reaction that we've seen in this thread. For that matter, exactly the kind of reaction that I posted immediately upon seeing it. Hell, it's not like the headline writer even has a specific space to fill like a copy editor for a print publication. He could easily have made the headline twice as long if he'd needed to, or just left out "Butte" altogether, and he'd have been fine.
Does this case deserve our ridicule? Of course not. All jokes aside, sexual assault is always a serious matter. Do the poor talentless hacks so devoid of even the most basic journalistic skills that they could only get editing jobs for an obscure Montana television station (for ****'s sake, editing the writers who work for a TV station?) deserve it? Well, that's up for debate simply because they might not know any better, but to be perfectly honest, I'm not above making fun of them.
